Incontinent dog
By: LesserGoddess Date: February 12, 2022, 4:23 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
So, my dog became really ill about a month ago, turned out a lot
of things wrong with her. Biggest is she has a tumor that I
can't afford to treat. She started seizing at the ER, so she's
on phenobarbital.
She's incontinent, and it's a huge headache.
She manages to get any diaper I put on her off, and I don't like
the idea of them anyway 'cause I'm afraid she'll get a UTI,
especially when she poops in the diaper.
I bought a playpen for her, thought it would work well, she
paces around in it constantly and messes up the peepads so I
have a mess to clean up when I get home. And when she poos in
there, she walks through it which is so gross.
Any ideas??
I'm talking with the vet next week about weaning her off pheno,
it may be the reason she's incontinent, but she might also be
off it...

I’m so sorry. I know it’s difficult.
We had an elderly Dalmatian who had issues later in life making
it through our work day.
We kept her in a bedroom with a wood floor and lined the floor
with 4x8 foot sheets of corrugated plastic. We used duct tape to
seal.
We cleaned up with old towels and washed them every day. Then it
was a quick bleach mopping.
She only walked in the poo if you dawdled getting her outside
which was a blessing.

Yes, I've washed more laundry this past month than I think ever.
The plastic sounds like a good idea

I wonder if she might be responsive to paper training,
especially if she was originally trained for it. It might help
with the walk-through.
I’m not an experienced dog-person, having only been with my
senior girl. But maybe early training could be re-activated.

I had forgotten, we had a flat weave area rug which was the
primary “towel”.
We have had a lot of practice with senior kitties. They’re so
much easier than a 75 pound dog.

How big is the dog?
Incontinent with poop, pee, or both?
When does the incontinence happen?

She's 23 pounds. For defecating, she seems to be able to hold it
until I take her outside, If I'm home. When she's alone she can
usually hold it until I'm home.
Urinating - she really can't hold it. And she pees constantly,
even if she hasn't had water for a while.

I adopted her as an adult, I don't think she was paper trained.

When Slobberdog was a puppy and crated several hours one day per
week I put a makeshift litterbox in with her. I filled it with
shredded paper. She was very good about using it.
I am willing to bet this could be trained.
I've also seen wood pellets in puppy litterboxes.

Interesting. It's worth a try.
I have her in the crate rn and the whines and sighs are epic ;D
She's one of those dogs that walks about a lot and it gets a bit
much.
