Friend is hosting, they are thinking a portillos spread and
beer.
beef sammiches, pasta, salad and chocolate cake, can't go wrong
Partner is in charge of guacamole, other people will bring
various apps, it's been a few years since we did this, looking
forward to it.

I guess we will do KC BBQ
We've made some tentative plans for food. I think I just want to
order door dash again.

As starters, soft pretzels with mustard. :) I actually think I
can order some in from Philly. I'm excited - haven't tasted
these in years.
Much as I'd love to have a real, honest-to-God hoagie, I'm the
only one who loves them. So it will likely be a Philly "sausage
and peppers" on Italian bread with grilled onions and provolone.
Or else cheese steak. Neither one a health food, both utterly
delicious. :)
Dessert? Philly cheesecake or Amish apple turnovers A friend
is doing Tastycakes, which admittedly are a Philly staple and I
had them in my lunches growing up. But they don't somehow seem
festive enough.

I think you definitely have to have an open mind when trying
Cincinnati Chili for the first time. If you expect it to taste
like Texas chili, you are not going to like it.
ETA: I remember trying to convince my Mexican buddy to go to
Taco Bell with me for lunch in high school. He said, "That's
not Mexican food!" I was like yeah, you are right. Just don't
think of it as Mexican food, and just try it to see if you like
it. He got hooked on Cheesearitos!

IMO the mediterranean influence is really there in Cincinnati
chili. I think it's more helpful to think of it as a meat sauce
rather than chili. I'm really into Lebanese and Georgian food,
they have meat dishes with fruit and/or nuts and spices we think
of as "sweet" such as cinnamon in savory dishes. I'm guessing
there's oregano in the c. chili also that yells "Greek!" to me.

So we've more or less fixed the menu thusly:
Burnt ends from the local BBQ place. Oldest swears that Burnt
ends are more Texas than KC but I'm serving them anyways.
Wings from my grocer's freezer. Two kinds: buffalo and honey
bbq. Ranch to go with.
Philly cheesesteak stromboli. I was gonna do sliders but my
stromboli kicks ass.
Veggie plate
Fruit plate
chips, etc
I might add some frozen app type things like pigs in a blanket
or mini empanadas if the mood strikes.
I don't need dessert, right? Should I make brownies or
something? Personally I'd so much rather spend my calories on
salty crunchy snax.

Dammit. I've been informed that the Superbowl starts at 6, not
8, so I will be stuck watching at least some of it after all
(because I spend Sunday evenings with my parents and my
brother). I guess I'll think about bringing snacks, to reward
myself for not whining like a toddler the whole time (the whole
time. there will be a little whining, just to annoy my brother).
Time to scour this thread for ideas.

Wait. You can't turn it on while you are there? Not even for
the silly commercials?

Agree: salt trumps sugar, so ditch the sweets.
Besides, after snakking on all of those other yum courses, who
would even have room to consider dessert??

They will have it on while I'm there - I thought it would start
after I left and I'd get out of it!
I have watched So Much Damn Football this season. I thought I
was done. But I will deal. I will probably deal better if I make
myself some buffalo cauliflower "wings" though.

I'd say at least half of the viewers don't watch the football at
all. Nosh on snax and keep an eye out for Tide commercials.
