The Buffalo Bills/Steelers game got postponed from Sunday at 1
to Monday at 4:30 due to the cold weather.
But the Chiefs/Dolphin game is going forward tonight, even with
-4 degrees, -23 with the wind chill. Hope no one gets hurt due
       to the cold.

Mojo to all of you worried about losing your heat. And I agree
with Mikijean that freezing rain is probably the worst weather -
I'd much prefer to have colder weather and snow.
We have an old house built with very little insulation. Husband
added insulation to the upstairs when he updated the finishes
years ago - before that we had a situation when the kids'
bedding actually froze against the wall one winter - there was
almost an inch of ice between the mattress and the wall and the
sheet was frozen into it. And the little half bath under the
dormers upstairs had neither insulation nor heating - so the
pipe froze once when the kids left the bathroom door to the tiny
       room shut overnight.
But with the upstair insulated now (including the ceiling) we
stay pretty warm, even with the thermostat set to 67 in the day,
63 overnight. We always wear layers - in part because we are in
and out of the house walking the dog or running errands or
shoveling. We have down comforters on the beds and wool throws
in the living room. Also - due to my back pain issues, I use a
heating pad on my bed and one in my living room chair. It is
amazing how much that helps keep you warm - heating pad on my
back and a wool throw on my lap. Just an idea in case it's of
interest. I sometimes, even in the cold, sleep with my limbs
sticking out from the comforter because I am hot.
It is interesting to hear how this all varies around the
country. I didn't realize people let their faucets drip inside
their houses. I assume if you have hose bibs outside, you turn
off the water to them, right? We do that in the fall here. A
neighbor didn't do it a year or two ago, and my husband saw the
water spraying outside their house after the pipe froze and
broke. He turned off the outside hose bib and left them a
voicemail. Sadly the water spray reached the furnace exhaust
and the water went in and flooded the furnace in the basement so
they had no heat when they got home.

We have covers that go over the outside faucets and fit snuggly
to the outside wall. They seem to offer enough protection
against freezing here. It's the pipes from the main to the
various faucets that I worry about freezing.

Before we redid our kitchen, and insulated it, it was COLD. It’s
over the garage. The silverware got cold in the drawers. The
half bath off the kitchen was freezing too. Sitting down was not
       fun.
When we renovated, we insulated and added radiant heat. Let’s
just say - it’s wonderful. We have a kitty/doggie door out to
the deck, and the flap seal is not perfect, but we’re still nice
       and warm now.

The first winter after I bought my house I didn’t know the
outside water needed to be shut off. My parents never did it. So
I had that same frozen pipe when I was away. My sister was
living with me at the time and saw it but she couldn’t shut the
main water shut off because the valve was hard to turn. So we
got my brother to drive over and do it. Then I called the former
owner and he told me where the shut off for the pipe was so my
sister could turn the water back on.
Since I had to replace the cracked section of pipe I decided to
replace the main valve with one easier to turn. I was wondering
       if homeownership was for me.

Our house isn't cold inside, but we still have the original
kitchen cabinets (which I love) and the coffee cups kept in the
cabinets are cold on cold mornings. We just microwave water in
them to warm them up while the kettle is heating to make the
coffee. For some reason, this didn't occur to me to do for
       YEARS. Ha!

Well, my car is totally frozen shut. Extra twist is that there
are a couple cases of Coke in the trunk. So I will need to get
that opened before they thaw. Monday is supposed to barely get
above freezing, so I suppose that will be the opportunity to
pour warm water over everything. (I just tried now on the seams
of the trunk with some alcohol and it did not do any good.)
Total accumulation is only about an inch, a frozen mix of snow,
rain and sleet that will support my weight. Some more predicted
for tomorrow am, but not supposed to be much. But it got below
20 degrees quicker than I expected and I am little worried about
my pipes. Hope the insulation is sufficient!! This house has
surely seen temperatures like this before, but maybe the
previous occupants were taking precautions that I am not. I'll
       be the first to know.
PS I have to switch out the hummingbird feeders every three
hours! That's how fast they freeze. The birds still appear to
have enough energy to fight over it, but I haven't actually seen
       any feeding.

It’s 17 the other side of the Columbia here in SW WA. And the
high was 20. I too have been on hummingbird duty and the
feeders have been a chore but the little guys need help. Here’s
one… I moved it closer by the house hoping it’d stay a few
degrees warmer but they still froze in a couple hrs or less. The
deer have been hanging out, up to 9! And my suet and sunflower
       feeders are full.
       Good luck w/ your car!!

I was fortunate and never lost power. At the peak of power
outages, 62% of residents in my county were without power, but
almost all have power now. Me and cat are doing fine, on the
daybed under our blankets. I am heating my back muscles and
joints with a heating pad, the usual wake up routine on the bad
       arthritis days.
I haven't checked on my car, but I imagine it has about an inch
of accumulated ice/snow/sleet and is frozen shut just like
Tryp_OR's car. I have no plans to drive anywhere today anyway.
I hope for a walk this afternoon, but if it is too slippy I
won't go. I don't want to bust my ass.
Mojo that everyone comes out of this round of winter weather
okay. Thank you to Lurknomore and Tryp_OR for braving the
       weather to save the hummingbirds!

       The sky is blue!
We had a little sun a couple days ago but otherwise it’s been in
       short supply this winter.
It’s -8 and the wind chill is currently -27 but I do t care
since I have no reason to go outside. I may run over to the
little store to get some bread in a few hours but that’s less
than a block so the cold won’t matter much for that.
