Offensive words - and which ones are TOO offensive
   DIR By: animaniactoo

We are generally happy that we can curse here. But we agree that
some derogatory terms should be off the table. Others we don't.
So... let's talk about which ones offend us and why and see how
       that goes.
Starting back at my comment that I posted on a daily thread:
--- Quote from: animaniactoo link ---
       >
       > Re: The conversation below about That Word. I admit that the
Boebert went right over my head. I curse - quite a lot. And yet
that particular word is far enough removed from my vocabulary
that I didn't even make the connection.
       >
       > I also find it deeply offensive in ways that I am struggling
to understand and express because I don't have much of an issue
with rhymes-with-witch. Which is a similarly gendered insult.
But I use the latter and not the former, and I have zero wish to
reclaim the former or anything like that. Not when I have such a
wonderful list of other adjectives/insults I can use, many of
       which are more gender neutral.
       >
       > I'd like to know more about what others think, but maybe that
should be a separate conversation, not here in the daily thread?
       Thoughts?
       >
       --- End Quote ---
For reference this is about an image of Boebert on a Bundt, and
the C word was not used outright, but it is the obvious
implication. Someone strongly objected to that, so that's the
       background of this.
We also had a couple of other words that had disagreements, so I
think it makes sense to have a thread where we can boot those
discussions and be able to discuss without losing them in the
Daily thread, especially when looking for a sense of consistency
overall on what is acceptable and what is not and why.

Not a fan of racial, cultural (e.g. "redneck") or gendered
slurs. Although "dick" seems like weak sauce.
Mostly I think it's pretty rude to call names, although I
       suppose that's the point.
So fuck, shit, dammit are fine, but calling someone a bad word
       bugs me.
I am aware that I break this rule myself but I'd be willing to
       try to be better.
Oddly "go fuck yourself" bothers me much less than "you are a
       smarmy backstabbing c**t."

I agree with Queenie except I'm okay with male-gendered insults
(bastard, dick). You know, as long as we're being gender
       inclusive when we use them.

Do you remember the Elayne Boosler routine, where she couldn't
understand why "go fuck yourself" was used as a curse, because
it was such a good thing? "Go audit yourself" was her
       alternative.

Justin Bieber has a song that goes something like "you can go
and love yourself". I know he meant it as an insult, but it's
       really not bad advice.

I'm not going to use any slang for vagina (c, p, or t), but I
have no qualms or compunctions about any of the various slang
       for penis.
I'm quite fond of all the ways fuck can be used.
I probably won't ever call anyone a bitch, but I'm okay if
people want to bitch about stuff.
Any other swears and curses are pretty much fine with me, but if
people want to use Haxified swears, that's cool, too.

To go along with the 4 letter word under discussion I also hate
this 4 letter word....twat. I spelled it out because I'm not
sure if its common usage in the US which is where I think most
of us are located so t**t might not mean anything. This was a
very common alternative to c**t where I grew up.
Mr. Ryder used it once and I exploded on him. I think I might
have frightened him with my ferocity because I was not
impressed. It did appear that usage was not known to him but he
       hasn't used the word since.
And I swear a lot!!!! But I normally don't swear in the sense of
       calling people names.

On the cultural ones, I think it often depends on who is saying
it and to whom. If you're of a certain culture and speaking to
same, it's not the same thing as someone who isn't saying the
       same word.
For instance, "redneck" and "trailer trash" are no big deal in
my neck of the woods. Both are understood to convey more about
actions & attitudes, and they aren't limited to wealth. A person
in a McMansion with an Ivy School degree can be trailer trash; a
person who lives in a trailer and uses food stamps might be,
might not, not enough info to tell.
I don't consider myself a redneck but I have my moments. If a
local called me one, I'd know what they meant. I might not like
it, but only because I'd know I'd done something tacky and
embarrassed myself. If someone else called me one, it'd be
different because it would mean something different.

I tend not to use curse words much myself, but I can tolerate
most of them. That said there are a few that really do make me
       flinch - or worse.
The c word we discussed today is one of them. The n word should
go without saying. The r word.
I'm not necessarily saying we should ban them (or references to
them) from the forum. But I personally hope not to see them.

I think the people of Rom can call themselves gypsies but nobody
else can. I think Black people can call themselves the N word
       but nobody else can.
I think in a place like this it's pretty hard to know who is
"allowed" to call themselves a faggot, a redneck, etc.
Calling someone else that is treacherous ground, and frankly I
can't see how "trailer trash" is ever OK.
