All this talk about COIVD never going away reminds me that we
still live with the descendant of the Spanish Flu. I don't
remember which flu variant it is, but it's still with us - it
morphed and evolved becoming less deadly but it's still with us.
I think we will just need to accept that our annual flu vaccine
will be joined with an annual COVID vaccine. An interesting
thing I did read was that the mRNA technology will allow a
better flu vaccine every year. With the current system (growing
it in eggs) it takes months and so the medical people have to
make an educated guess as to which flu strain will be dominant
in any given year. With the mRNA technology it takes less time
to make the vaccine allowing those that make this decision more
time to see which flu strain will be dominant.
That being said - we do need a better health system.

Indeed. This thought has made me more angry at those who could
afford to stay home when infected but refused based on political
ideology or anti-science ideology or whatever other horse hockey
they pointed to. The former guy at that White House garden
event where he was the super spreader comes to mind. I do not
blame people who are just trying to feed their kids and keep the
heat on.

I can't spend energy being mad at people over how they cope with
this. Nobody is coviding *at* me.
I gotta just protect myself the best I can and let the rest go.

The people who went maskless and coughed on people on purpose
covided at others. I refuse to believe not a single one of them
was contagious with covid when they did those things, and I
don't think any of them cared if they harmed others. Maybe they
didn't covid at you or me personally, but we saw it happening.

I think we do have to worry about them, particularly with
omicron.
The preliminary information coming out of S Africa is that the R
number for omicron is an incredible 3.5 (Roughly translates to
10 people will infect 35 others). That means the transmission
is staggering, so every selfish dumbass here who doesn't mask
will infect a large number of people. We don't know how severe
omicron is, but the hospitalizations out of SA are high, so I
doubt people are having the sniffles.

I disagree. Protect yourself. Vaccinate. Mask. Distance if you
want. Isolate if you want.
Obsessing about what "they" are doing or not doing is futile.
When I'm driving I assume that everyone else on the road is an
idiot who is trying to kill me. Same with covid. Anything better
than that is a delightful bonus.

Why would I waste my time worrying about what precautions other
people are taking?? I can only control my actions, and I choose

Um, just to be perfectly clear......I agree you can't change
what millions of other people are doing on a daily basis. Not
remotely possible.
I still think it is a good idea to be aware of what's coming
your direction, and what actions your area is taking. Or not.
(For example, our state governor has decided to ignore
covid/delta and covid/omicron. There are still bans against
masking. It helps to know what people are and are not doing at
a state or societal response level. This is where public health
policy comes in, as nothing can be done at the individual
level).
And we've got this: "Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey is defying a
demand that he stop using federal coronavirus relief money to
fund an education grant program that can only go to schools
without mask mandates."
That relief money could go for so many other things.

Ugh. PB, I agree with you that it pays to be paying attention
and aware - in a lot of ways so that you know what you NEED to
and CAN do to protect yourself.
So sorry about Ducey. May he be defeated soundly in the next
election.
