Fwiw - I think this is the kind of thing that is important
enough to have right and there has been so much misinformation
about, that if you're not prefacing with a qualifier such as "My
understanding is..." and/or including a link to an authoritative
source, then thinking about it like you need to be prepared to
defend it along the lines of a dissertation defense is a good
way to approach posting about it.

The scientific articles tend to include lots of references to
"may" and "could." So expecting someone in here to have
definitive info seems a tall order. The science on Covid simply
isn't settled.
I will, however, list sources from now on.

We were, and you were also putting me on the defensive. So it
seemed fair to me to ask you to step back a little, but I wasn't
asking you to quit posting, either. Does that make sense?
I'd rather talk this out, than leave things unresolved, if you
don't mind. And I don't mind doing so out in the open.

We're good. I think.
FYI I am not trying to win or defend. I'm just interested in
reading the info. I'm fond of saying "the data is the data" in
my actual life and mostly I just want to know what the data
actually say.

Sure, but even the qualifiers of "may" or "could" are clear as
to where the science is at this moment, and is useful I think. I
don't necessarily expect someone to have definitive info at this
point - just to be careful not to speak as if they do when they
don't.
I am also well-known for hating absolutes in talking about stuff
when there is any room for more flexibility in a view or opinion
being expressed, so I try to keep that in check, but I do think
it's something to be aware of in how we talk about stuff in
general.

Okay, that makes sense. I misinterpret your tone and intent,
sometimes. It's something I'm working on, but it's a real

I"m wondering how scientists and epidemiologists are tracking
the rate of transmission of Omicron in South Africa. Omicron
was first found in Gauteng province (where Jo'berg and Pretoria
are). This area is the smallest province - it's like under 2%
of the country - but it's where a quarter of the entire
population is. It wouldn't take much for a virus to spread in
such a densely populated area.
Hospitalizations there are up over 400%.
I'm wondering if Omicron is so mild in comparison to other
variants, why is there a 400% increase in hospitalizations?
