I think it may be an either/or setup. I know my godmother plays
without putting the pangram in because it will automatically
kick her out and tell her it looks like she's pretty good at
this and maybe she should subscribe.

Huh. I could have sworn it always said "Play to the highest
level" before. Maybe if you hit the pangrams they just assume
you're a genius?
If I didn't love doing the crossword, I wouldn't be paying for
spelling bee, but the crossword does it for me.
Well, yeah, and I pay for the articles (separately).
I don't pay.

Oh, sure, I'd bet they accept "grass" or "sorghum" and "wheat"
when the letters allow, but ignore "milo". It's a perfectly
legitimate grain, for Pete's sake! Or is it a word that's become
some kind of slur when I wasn't looking?
Dunno, Aardtacha. ( dunno is an accepted word🤔) However,
arthroplasty is not, nor are many other fairly common medical
words. This annoys me to no endoscopy😉.

That's why they shut me out. Get the pangrams, and it shuts
down.
I thought they dumped you based on whether you'd hit genius.
Did that change?
If I get all the pangrams, I'm out. I never had it happen any
other way.
Lab, I also don’t pay. It doesn’t necessarily kick you out when
you get the pangrams. It all depends on the total number of
points you can get that day. It kicks you out after you reach a
certain percentage of the total points. There’s a website,
nytbee.com that gives answers and analysis. It explains some of
this.

I got 2 words today (one shorter word and a pangram, in that
order), and then it locked me out. If I want to keep playing, I
have to subscribe. So no, I'm not paying.

Yeah, I’m with you there. I subscribe to NYT, but you have to
pay more for the crossword and games, which I won’t do. I just
go to see if I can get the pangram(s). And to get pissed off
when they won’t accept my perfectly legit words.[emoji1]

Do you all submit word suggestions to
buzzwords@nytimes.com? Sam E. will occasionally add a word to
his list, like "annal" or "raffia."
Some folks in the Times Bee forum
HTML https://www.nytimes.com/spotlight/spelling-bee-forum
think
"bimbo" should be accepted, which I think is silly.
I pay for Bee access, but get a discount since we get the actual
paper delivered Friday-Sunday. I'm not into the regular
crosswords, but occasionally will do the mini crossword or play
Tiles.
My MIL has an online subscription, but not a Puzzles one, and
she gets kicked out of the Bee once she hits the "Solid"
category.
Slate ran a good article about the Bee a while back:
HTML https://slate.com/human-interest/2020/02/spelling-bee-new-york-times-praise.html
And they talked with Sam Ezersky in a recent podcast:
HTML https://slate.com/culture/2021/08/nyt-spelling-bee-sam-ezersky.html
I refuse to pay for unlimited access to Slate, fwiw.

If you are going to supply the letters for both dadbod and
badonkadonk and not credit the points, why even accept boob?

Speaking of asking why, how the ham-n-eggs is it that "piehole"
is a Bee-accepted word ?
A couple wks ago I jokingly typed it in, thinking, oh hell no,
and was shocked it worked.
Because: other than "I'm stuffing my ___" and "Shut your ___
!", it's not actually a real word in my universe.

If they accept all the stooopid OO words I can think of, why not
doodoo? 💩
