Leader of U.S. Catholic bishops decries social justice movements
       as ‘pseudo-religion’ (WaPo)
Pseudo-religion??? Um, I'd say social justice was an important
part of HIS religion, if he had a clue what his religion was
       about.
"And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto
you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these
my brethren, ye have done it unto me."

Meh. Catholic bishops don't exactly have their fingers on the
pulse of the mood of the country. And many of them wish we could
go back to the way things were--back when people attended mass
more faithfully, and people other than white men kept their true
       feelings under wraps in public.
And many more religious leaders are more concerned about how
much (or little) influence they wield, than trying to be
       Christlike, unfortunately. Power corrupts.
       (I go to a church that's attracted a lot of ex-Catholics. And
went to a Catholic school for K-8.)
Thanks for posting this here, rather than in the main thread,
btw. Religion can be a touchy topic for a lot of people,
       nowadays.

Grin...well..not long ago I posted something that was none too
political, as I thought (three examples of my general train of
thought, only one of which had a political slant)
Actually musings on my own part..purely philosophical...and on
my own had come to the conclusion that the phrase "common
decency"should really be retired, since there apparently is NO
common consensus on what decency actually is.

Yeah, I read that and apparently his muddle is that secular
morality shouldn't be allowed to drive social justice. Because
that way leads to abortion and women's lib and loose corsets.
Too many US bishops seem quite crooked by politics. Long
story there, somebody hinted to me the mob found religion useful
in Prohibition for bootlegging. That was 100 years ago. SIGH.

Well, whiterose, folks in here focus not only on whether a topic
is worthwhile to discuss, but also how it's being approached.
Someone who is curious about what other people think about
something, and makes that clear while responding to others'
replies, is likely to garner more positive responses in Haxnuts
than is somebody who seems intent on not changing his or her
mind, and gets upset when others don't stop asserting that their
own views are just as valid.
When I seem to be in the minority about a fraught topic, I find
it best to say what I think, and why, but then to not respond to
every reaction to it. And if my hackles are being raised too
much, I'll put my phone down for a while, and let things
percolate in my brain. That way, sometimes I'll think of a way
to respond that sounds better to other people. And sometimes, I
think, "Ya know, in the grand scheme of things, that view of
mine isn't so important," and find something else to write
       about, instead.
So, you might think about your approach to something, rather
than whether or not it's "too political," in the future.
I think, oftentimes, people are using the term "political" to
cover any topic that tends to turn into a feeding frenzy
nowadays. Last night, it happened to be about keeping kids safe
       from Covid, btw.
Yup, I think too much about all of this, sometimes! But I hope
at least some of it might be useful to you. Cheers.

Yeah, big hard "no" to the guy in the hat.
The world's largest criminal conspiracy to rape women and
children never preaches to anyone again, ever, about anything.
(and just yesterday, we "remembered" the foiling of that same
organization's terrorist plot to overthrow the government of
       England)
Man in the hat may sit all the way down, and shut all the way
       up.

In fact, I would say that social justice was central to the
foundation of his religion... a fact too often lost among the
leadership and many who practice it today.
Or maybe that's his concern. That he DOES know that and is
concerned that his flock may follow that cycle into a new
foundation. That's a pretty cynical thought and I would hope -
for the sake of the religion he represents and his followers -
that I am wrong about that.
