They were separated from Mama 2 weeks ago. I have no idea how
long the diarrhea thing was going on with the actual foster
home, but we've got it pretty much cleared up now with
probiotics (they were giving them tiny doses of some sort of
horse medicine assuming really resistant coccidea). Everyone
had lost weight over the last week since we saw them.
The 5 not at the animal hospital are better and more playful.
And their appetites have really improved since Saturday. I'll
be returning them to the foster carer with more of the probiotic
paste and powder and firm instructions from the vet not to give
them any more of the horse medicine. And before you start
hating on the foster home, remember that she got this stuff from
the rescue itself. I'm suspecting that someone isn't actually
taking the kits to the vet but is describing symptoms and
getting general treatment suggestions back. It's either that or
Dr. Google.
Emergency vet care costs a bomb, but both boys continue to
improve. They should be weaned off the dextrose drips to a
straight ringer's solution overnight. I'm thinking that I want
to float keeping them here (we're watching the kittens over the
Fall break next week anyway) and dealing with the antiviral and
the clavamox and the nutrical without the distraction of 5 other
kittens for those days.
In other news, Hoshi turns out to be yet another little boy.
Sigh. I'm outnumbered, but at least I can tell Scammy she's
still my baby girl.

So the emergency vet called me at 6 AM. Winston went into
cardiac arrest and didn't respond to CPR. The woman who spoke
to me kept saying "Winston is passed" over and over while
babbling about how to deal with his remains.
Not the best call.
Called this afternoon and they say that Ignis is still improving
but I'd better not count on bringing him home tonight.
