       Kaprekar's Constant

       6174
6174 is known as Kaprekar's constant, a mathematical curiosity
discovered by Indian mathematician D.R. Kaprekar in 1949. It
acts as a "mathematical black hole" for four-digit numbers:
taking any 4-digit number (with at least two different digits),
rearranging its digits in descending and ascending order, and
subtracting the smaller from the larger repeatedly will always
yield 6174 in at most seven steps.
       Example:
       9753
       3579
       6174

But it turns out you have to follow directions.

So, I take for instance 2026.
       Digits in descending order: 6220
       Digits in ascending order: 0226
       Subtracted: 5994
       in descending order: 9954
       in ascending order: 4599
       subtracted: 5355
       descending order: 5553
       ascending order: 3555
       subtracted: 1998
       descending order: 9981
       ascending order: 1899
       subtracted: 8082
       descending order: 8820
       ascending order: 0288
       subtracted: 8532
       already in descending order
       in ascending order: 2358
       subtracted: 6174
       damn.

My question is how do people figure stuff like this out in the
first place? Just playing round with numbers?
While I understand the importance of mathematics in explaining
things I don’t understand how you come to be playing with
numbers and discover something like this. Sorry Buttercup, but
numbers were always hard for me and the idea of doing it for fun
still doesn’t compute even though it got easier by my twenties -
       I’m guessing brain development.
