How can a woman not be the mother of a child she gave birth to?

I thought this was pretty interesting -

After reading this, I remembered that my eldest son's early
ultrasound looked like twins. And I had bleeding every single
week until the 4th month, when the ultrasound showed only a
single pregnancy. This is, according to the internet, a
"classic presentation of vanishing twin syndrome."
I'm going to have to think about this for a bit...

This was a recent plot line in the tv show Doc, except the mom
died in childbirth and the father had chimerism.
I saw it in another show or movie recently as well, but I don’t
recall which that was. So weird that I’ve heard of it three
times in the last few weeks and hadn’t heard of it before! At
       least not that I recall.

Back during my first pregnancy, my OB/GYN said that they were
starting to realize (this was in 1987) that it was very common
to conceive twins and lose one of them early on. Until they
started doing early ultrasounds, they hadn't known how common it
       was.

Years ago when TLC used to show medical stuff, they had a show
called "I am my own twin" that covered a woman who had two sets
of DNA - none of the DNA from her bloodstream transferred to her
children. Somehow it came up and she was accused of stealing her
children and they even had someone monitoring her last child
birth so she could prove it was her child. Finally they found a
       medical researcher who mentioned chimerism
       BLEW my mind
Unfortunately I've never been able to find that particular
       episode again
