This may seem odd but if it were mine I'd knock it down to a
single thread and lock out creation of new threads, if that's
possible.
That's not being harsh or strict, it's simply creating a single
point where "the action is" and making it easier for Hax
refugees who are used to a single-thread comment section.
:-)
I agree with Sbig - I think it's far better to have a single
thread every day. Multiple topics just means more to look at
and possibly more to miss.
I don't particularly like looking around at all the various
topics, I'd rather have it all together. And I can skip past
posts that are on a topic I don't care for. Maybe the only
exception would be recipes.
Just my opinion, of course.

I'm wondering if there could be a main topic that is Thread of
the Day and then each day's topic being under that? I had a
hard time finding the Thread of the Day, since it's in smaller
font as "Child Boards: Thread of the Day" underneath and
indented under General Discussion. I mean, General Discussion
makes sense and I'll get used to it. But the Thread of the Day
doesn't register as prominently as the other topics and yet it
in arguably the primary thread.

Maybe it makes the most sense to move "Thread of the Day" to the
top position and pull it out from under General Discussion? I
can do that fairly easily if you think that would work better as
a sort of "first hit landing pad".

Okay, so I moved stuff around a little - this forum (customizing
our forum) is now at the end of general as the majority of the
initial setup is done.
I left General Discussion on top because that's where the
Community Rules and Playground threads are and I think it's best
for people to start there. But I pulled "thread of the day" out
from being a child under it and it now holds the obvious 2nd
position for visibility/ease of access.

Thanks to Ani for setting this up!
I'd suggest a New Members thread where people can introduce
themselves.

Re Copyright and copying the Hax column
I've looked at the fair use exception of copyright law, and a
few court cases. The fair use exception, which has 4 elements to
it, doesn't bode well for this type of use. Oreally covered one
of them. So, especially given that this site has been well
publicized in WaPo, I think it would be best not to take the
risk of regularly copying it.
I am not a lawyer, but my previous work was at a library and one
of our librarians got occassional briefings on copyright from
the state associate attorney general and shared them with the
rest of the library. What constitutes fair use has been left to
case law.
I agree with Kathsky, this would be unlikely to pass a fair use
test. A web page about the four parts going into the fair use
test:
HTML https://fairuse.stanford.edu/overview/fair-use/four-factors/
the purpose and character of your use
Is your use for profit or educational? Is the copyrighted
material being used in order to create a substatially new work
such as making visual art into a collage or a novel into a
satire?
the nature of the copyrighted work
Uncreative work, something mechanical like weather data or
republication of material that was previously published
copyright-free or that has expired from copyright is seen as
more likely to get a fair use exemption. Doesn't really apply
here, the column is new work.
the amount and substantiality of the portion taken
It was proposed to post the whole column, every day, soon after
it's available on the WaPo. Not much chance of a fair use
exemption there.
the effect of the use upon the potential market.
Posting it here was suggested primarily in order to save the
WaPo subscription fees for this forum's participants. Not much
chance of a fair use exemption here either.
The four factors are issues for future courts to consider. It
is NOT intended that all the factors must be satisfied, or even
more than one necessarily, but that courts consider how well the
use in question satisfies each one of the factors and then must
weigh the factors against each other.
Also keep in mind that I don't think anyone here wants to spend
money putting up a legal defence against WaPo. And the
existence of this forum was posted about in their comments
section, so it's not going to be a secret or anything.
TLDR: No, don't repost Hax's column here.

Ty, kkt. I think that's pretty definitive that we should not be
posting the text of it here. I think we can summarize the issues
in our own words if we choose when we post our own thoughts, but
that's about it.

The more I think about this, the more I think we should not have
a bunch of distinct topic threads. The beauty of the OT days
was that anyone could say anything and we would ALL potentially
see it. If someone's kid is sick and they feel they have to go
to the Families area to write about it, only a fraction of us
would see that because (in my mind anyway) we're not all going
to check all the various topic forums every day. I would rather
everything be in the daily column discussions, just like the old
days. After all, we're here because we want to preserve the OT
community, right? Not enforce new OT rules? Just my 2 cents. I
may go rogue and post this in the daily thread also, for the
reasons above.
