Yeah, that's why I set up the "Thread of the Day" for those who
want to just follow a single thread. Right now we're very much
in the "wait and see what people choose to do" territory, and
we'll see how that plays out.
But also - a shortcut to seeing everything new since you last
checked in - under your name in the upper left, there's a link
for "show unread posts since last visit" and it will show you
all the threads that have new comments on them. :)

A little about copyright
The owner of copyrighted works (probably Wapo in this case) has
exclusive rights to display the works publicly. There are fair
use exceptions. If our use of the Hax column causes a loss of
revenue to the copyright owner -- without regard to whether we
make money -- it would probably not be considered fair use. I
believe many of us have argued that our exodus will cause
financial harm to Wapo. But, is it substantial harm? Maybe,
maybe not. We certainly don't have the deep pockets to fight
this, and they might very well be watching for our use of their
column. After all, they did decide to stop allowing other
newspapers to carry the column. I don't feel like we can use it
because we are doing so pretty much specifically to avoid having
to go to Wapo. This is just one layperson's opinion, but I think
no, we cannot, especially since our reason is to avoid the
owner's website.
"Effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the
copyrighted work: Here, courts review whether, and to what
extent, the unlicensed use harms the existing or future market
for the copyright owner’s original work. In assessing this
factor, courts consider whether the use is hurting the current
market for the original work (for example, by displacing sales
of the original) and/or whether the use could cause substantial
harm if it were to become widespread." (U.S. Copyright Office
Fair Use Index, copyright.gov)

Hiya!! Thanks, animaniactoo, for setting this up!
Years ago, I participated on the College Confidential forums.
Eventually, some folks people posting in a particular thread --
of a huge number of people -- mentioned they would like a more
private place to chat, so I set up a phpbb much like this one
with a wide variety of forums. The group has winnowed over the
years, and I'm probably the only member of it who hasn't met any
of the other members, but the stalwart posters of the group
still check in daily.
Almost entirely on one thread!
Almost all of the additional forums/sub-forums are not used. The
few forums/threads on that private board that do get used are:
[li]Ah, What Foods These Morsels Be! (recipes, of course)[/li]
[li]Meetups! Zoom or otherwise[/li]
[li]2021 wellness thread" (the "wellness" threads usually fewer
than 30 posts/year)[/li]
[li]YouTubes videos to watch[/li]
[li]Election 2020[/li]
[li]Tell us a joke![/li]
[li]The Bucket List[/li]
Forums/taglines for them I'd set up that had a little activity
initially (in 2008!) but otherwise have scarcely been used:
[li]Books Brothers (Every good Main Street has a good
bookstore)[/li]
[li]The Concert Hall (Conversation about music)[/li]
[li]How Great Thou: Art! (The pleasures of the visual arts)[/li]
[li]Moxy Roxy (Big screen, big thrills, big chills, and here,
the popcorn's free!)[/li]
[li]The Hot Tub (Bathing suits optional)[/li]
There are more, but you get the gist. Just so you know...
there's plenty of cooking/books/concerts/etc. chat on the main
thread; for recipes, the chat is on the main thread but the
recipe sometimes gets posted to one of the threads in the Ah,
What Foods! forum, which has ... 11 threads. In 13 years.
I don't share this to discourage the idea of a lot of
forum/sub-forum/threads! I think it will be interesting to see
what happens here, and I'm delighted to be here!

Thx Owlice, yeah, it will be interesting to see what happens. I
don't have anything particularly invested in the initial setup
working out right or being *the* path, it's just what I think
makes the most sense to me given the functionality we have and
what people expressed an interest in. If they post off-topic all
over the place... this entire place is off-topic! lol.
Glad to see you here. :)

FWIW I greatly, greatly prefer this type of site to the one
thread per day environment over at WaPo.
I find it much much easier to keep track of various
conversations. You don't end up with one thread that is three
thousand posts long where you really can't find out what
happened unless you already know what you are looking for.
Whereas here I can go check out the DT thread and see how he's
doing, then bop over to the food room and see if anybody posted
a recipe and then in two clicks I'm in the dirty jokes thread.
To be fair, it is very very different from the WaPo setup. But
I like that.

I'm learning to navigate by means of the links at the top of the
page:
Show unread posts since last visit.
Show new replies to your posts.
Then I have to remember to skip to the last open page to get the
newest news.

Re Copyright and copying the Hax column
I've looked at the fair use exception of copyright law, and a
few court cases. The fair use exception, which has 4 elements to
it, doesn't bode well for this type of use. Oreally covered one
of them. So, especially given that this site has been well
publicized in WaPo, I think it would be best not to take the
risk of regularly copying it.

This may seem odd but if it were mine I'd knock it down to a
single thread and lock out creation of new threads, if that's
possible.
That's not being harsh or strict, it's simply creating a single
point where "the action is" and making it easier for Hax
refugees who are used to a single-thread comment section.
Don't know if it's possible to select in or out in the
configuration but is qualifying with hCaptcha really necessary
just to make a reply?
:-)

Yes, as Skowronek said, the captcha is ONLY for the first
comment you make - or the first PM you send if you haven't made
any posts yet.
It's a little annoying but I think we'd rather do that than see
8900 spambots a day, if you know what I mean.
We do have a thread of the day, which seems to have worked well
yesterday as a "single point of action", and we'll see how the
other categories/forums work out. :)
