Vonn and rooting for her comeback to be successful, despite
thinking she was reckless. So sad to read she crashed almost
immediately and airlifted out. Hope she’ll be ok physically and
mentally.

You didn’t warn about a spoiler alert!
Sad to read she dashed (correction- crashed). One report said
it wasn’t related to the acl tear, but time will tell.

I know it must hurt worse than the physical injury, but I think
it might be time for act two.

I’m loving ice 💃 . I remember it when it was so rigid,
how it’s evolved is beautiful.
Since I don’t watch it regularly in non-Olympic years I’m
impressed by some of the moves that have come along in the last
few years.

My saying I thought Vonn was reckless was harsh. There’s a fine
line between recklessness & bravery, and I do admire her drive &
hard work.

This is Olympics but also politics and also a little spoilery,
so I'm putting it here but I'll spoiler tag it and if people
think it should be in politics instead I'll move it.
Amber Glenn is the first out LGBTQ+ female figure
skater to compete for the U.S. at the Olympics, and I'm pretty
sure at the international level more generally. There has been a
LOT of press about this over the years, and she has sometimes
wrapped herself in a pride flag when she's won medals (I don't
know if that's instead of or in addition to U.S. flags.
She means a great deal to the queer part of the figure skating
community. Which isn't like, a small part of the figure skating
community.
She made a very mild statement about this being a hard time to
be a queer person in the U.S. right now, because it fucking is,
and she got so many threats she had to leave social media
entirely.
She also underperformed in today's event. Not terribly, but
noticeably, and all of the announcer coverage was about nerves
skating on Olympic ice, and all of the post event interviews
were about what went wrong.
Maybe it was just nerves. She has a history of nerves in big
moments.
Or maybe she was terrified because people were relentlessly
threatening to hurt her because she happens to be attracted to
people who aren't always men.
And now instead of her celebrating the team gold, she has to
talk about what she did wrong, like she did something wrong at
all.
... I think I might be just as angry about this as I was about
the 2022 Russian doping scandal (which should have been about
the blatant and horrific child abuse of the entire Russian team,
and not about one skater and one banned substance.
TLDR with less spoilers: Amber Glenn means a lot to me. And I
hate what she is experiencing right now.

I’m pissed the reporter who asked her that question put her in
that position to begin with. Click bait bullshit. They had to
have known that whatever she said would’ve unleashed maga
insanity.

I've been enjoying seeing a lot of alterations in forms since
the last time I watched regularly. Clearly trying to take the
same old same old and do something a bit unique with it, even if
it's only a different arm position that creates a different
line/flow.

Random thoughts about Winter Olympic sports, part 1: women never
sweep in mixed doubles curling. Ever. When it's the woman's turn
to throw the stone, the man escorts the stone down the sheet,
and sweeps. The woman stays at the line, and calls out
instructions. When it's the man's turn to throw the stone, he
pops up after releasing it, catches up to it, and sweeps. The
woman stays by the target and calls out instructions.
It's not against the rules from the woman to sweep; it's just
never done.

Random thoughts about Winter Olympic sports, part 2:
"nationality" in Ice Dancing is kind of hilarious. The
Lithuanian woman is from Kalamazoo, Michigan. Her brother and
sister competed as a pair for Japan for several years. The
French pair includes a woman from Canada who skated for Denmark
for several years. One of the USA pairs consists of a man born
in Ukraine, and a woman born in the US who competed for Cyprus
for many years. There are several competitors born in Russia.
This isn't new; the Swedish world record holder/Olympic gold
medalist in the pole vault was born and raised in Lafayette,
Louisiana. But looking at the ice dance competition it hit me
how prevelant it's become.

Except for the Koreans. One throws, the other sweeps.

Huh. One of my coworkers is a woman and a curler (not an
Olympian). I'll have to ask her about this.
