Tanning bed users are at higher risk of skin cancer, especially
in unusual places

I knew tanning bed users were at higher risk for skin cancer but
it is worse than I imagined. Turns out my tanning in the actual
sun as a young person was a lot less dangerous.

I thought those things were almost gone. I saw a place
advertising tanning the other day and was surprised because I
haven't seen any in a long time.

I don't see them in strip malls any more either, but they are
still in fitness centers.
ETA: And then I read the article. Boy I hate to see that they're
coming back. They'd rather be tan even if it might mean melanoma
later? Pushing it on each other on Tik Tok. Hate to see this.

That’s because they have no idea how serious melanoma is. Just
ask kkt or billieryder and see what they’d say.

Thanks for posting this article!
Even in the early 80’s, tanning beds were considered dangerous
by the docs at clinic I worked at.
I never used one, but even as a nurse who knew better, with
Irish coloring no less, I continued to lie in the sun in futile
attempts to tan, although not to the point of burning,
blistering, and peeling, as I did in my teens!
So far I’ve had MOH’s surgery on my face for basal cell and
several extensive fluorouracil cream treatments for actinic
keratosis, a precursor to squamous cell skin cancer on face,
neck, arms, hands. Skin cancer is no joke.
Better to be pasty white, truly.

I tried but never had the patience to lay in the sun for very
long. I did however love to swim and spent many hours in water
before good sunblocks came on the market. And I’ve always been
an outdoors person so my freckled completion has had a few
removals. Not a serious as you, but also agree if I knew then
what I know now I’d have started using sunscreen every day on my
face many years earlier.

Considering I was a lifeguard for several years, and otherwise
loved being out in the sun and would spend All Day at the beach
without an umbrella, it’s kind of shocking that I don’t have
skin cancer. At least- not yet. I have had a few things checked
out to be sure.
I’ve been much more careful in the last 20+ years. Wear better
protection, don’t stay out as long.
I’m pretty sure I used a tanning bed a few times ages ago, when
they were first popular, but didn’t make a habit of it.

Sigh.
I never tanned. I can't: I get a few freckles but no real tan.
After that I go straight to burns.
