I got one. My first year in Baltimore I hosted Thanksgiving for
friends. It was my first turkey. I went to prep it Thanksgiving
morning only to find the kitchen sink was backed up. I couldn't
wait until maintenance got there so I had to wash the turkey in
the bathtub. Then I went to take out the innards bag and I
couldn't find it! I molested Tom looking for that damn bag. Up
to my elbow, digging around in nooks and crannies. No bag! So I
just figured it wasn't in there and put the turkey in the
oven...where it proceeded to smoke up the apartment. NO amount
of white wine and butter basting stopped the smoking. Friends
brought sides and the meal was great even though one friend was
like "Should I have cooked the green beans?" Uh yeah.
And when we went to cut up the left over turkey for people to
take home some, we found the bag. :-\

       I guess food’s a serious business with me. I can’t think of
       anything really funny.

Mine is cringeworthy. I made it rain in the kitchen.
Somehow, I mis-remmebered something and thought it was OK to put
Pyrex directly on the flame. I don't remmeber what I was trying
to cook (it was over 30 years ago), but I left a bowl of water
on the stovetop and left the room.
There was an explosion, and when we went in to check, there was
a cloud near the ceiling. It started to rain.
We lived there about 4 years, and were still finding shards of
       Pyrex when we moved out.
If anyone has a kitchen mishap, "At least it's not raining."

I believe Pyrex used to be flameproof ... and for the longest
time salespeople didn't know (or perhaps admit) that.

It doesn't have to be funny, it can just be memorable! The best
success you've ever had with something, conquering a recipe that
gave you fits, etc. as long as it's memorable.

I've done something similar. I left a glass casserole dish on a
hot burner and it shattered like nothing I've ever seen.

My MIL picked wild mushrooms every year, and she had a fabulous
recipe for them. One time she left them simmering on the stove,
and my SIL would not quit picking at them. With all her tasting,
she managed to eat about half the pan. When my MIL came to check
on them, she said how disappointing this year’s mushrooms were,
because she’d never had them shrink so much before. My SIL and I
had to leave the room cause we were laughing so hard.

My first time making shortbread cookies was memorable. I can’t
remember how much butter I was actually supposed to put in, but
in my misreading of the recipe, I used twice as much. They
smelled delicious while baking, but were a nice buttery mess
when I took them out of the oven.

       Memorable?
Well my Dad liked Swedish Brown Beans or Sour Beans. I did too
so for a few years I’d make them for him at Christmas. Then I
couldn’t find the beans anymore so I talked to my aunt, his
sister, who gave me a handful from her garden to use as seed. So
for a couple years I not only cooked them but I grew the beans,
too. Then my crop failed and that was the end of the Sour Beans.
I found the beans on line few years ago and tried the recipe
again and frankly I don’t know what all the fuss was about.
They were ok but not great. I could see why no one else thought
they were worth all the trouble. Part of the allure was
obviously that it made Dad happy and he’s been gone for a long
       time.

Years ago, I was working on a cookbook with some friends of
mine, and we thought it would be fun to put in some old recipes.
OLD recipes. I have a number of old cookbooks, and so I
fetched them out, dusted them off, and started in on testing
       some of the recipes.
There were the usual issues with bigger eggs and whatnot, but
beyond that I discovered that there were a number of recipes
that could best be described as "healthful and filling." Tasty?
No. They'd be great for a diet cookbook because there would be
NO temptation to get seconds. They weren't bad, mind you --
       they just weren't good.
And the WWII recipes. Oh my God! There is a Treet and Lima
Bean casserole that is engraved into my memory, and not in a
good way. I didn't try that one -- I had developed a modicum of
self-protection by that time -- and even now I wonder if anyone
ever did fix that thing. Gaaaah.

I've told this story in other places before, but it belongs
       here.
Macarons. Macarons are fussy little things to make. But... I was
watching Kid's Baking Championship and they had to make Macarons
for one challenge. There was some crying, but most of them
pulled it off. And I am not a half bad baker, so I was like...
if they can do it, so can I!
So off I went to my mom's house with the Viking double oven and
the Nordicware aluminum baking sheets to play. Mom was really
struggling by that point, but playing with food and trying
things out was always one of the things that we did and talked
about together, and she was really up for fun project, even
though her contribution was somewhat limited (bouncing recipes
off of her for her experience, bringing her ingredients to help
measure/prep/combine, discussing the flavor combos we thought
would work). We tried out 3 different recipes, one of which was
clearly superior to the others... at least in our ability to
       carry it off.
I took a bunch of the flavor tryouts to work and got compliments
from an actual French person - meaning born and raised in France
       - who told me that I had done them perfectly. And I'm not sure
that I can make a macaron anywhere other than my mom's house in
her oven, but at least when I'm ready to try it somewhere else,
I've got the recipe and the flavor combos ready!
