       Baking a birthday cake

So should I go with orange chocolate cake with an orange
chocolate ganache? Plain chocolate with orange chocolate
ganache? Orange chocolate cake with plain ganache?
Also, do I want a layer cake or just a sheet cake?
This is because I'm too lazy to do the orange chocolate
cheesecake (and because it's my birthday cake, but I only ever
eat a small slice of the cheesecake before it's gone).

Well, okay, if it were me, I would go for the chocolate cake
with the orange chocolate ganache. But... since this is you for
YOUR birthday... how much of a citrus lover are you?
And... because you are maybe feeling kinda lazy about this? How
do you feel about doing a bundt cake? Step up from a sheet cake,
not as much work as a layer cake.

No bundt pan. I'm still waffling about whether there'd be too
much orange if I go full on cake and icing with the orange
chocolate. But I do like orange chocolate...

Hmm. You could hint of orange in the cake by making an orange
syrup and doing a soak before frosting it... so the top area
would get more orange than the bottom and you can temper the
strength of the orange in the syrup.

I love orange chocolate but I think things could get super
orangy super fast if you double up! I would put the orange in
       one or the other.
I love a layer cake myself.
       Happy Birthday!

I am not a fan of chocolate, but I prefer cakes with the layer
of intense flavor idea ani suggested. A soak on top of the cake
with orange in the ganache but not the cake sounds best to me.
I like sheet cakes for the frosting or ganache to cake ratio.
Layers can get to be too much sweet depending on the recipe.
But, you make it the way you like it. Happy birthday!!!

My niece the pastry chef made the most amazing vegan olive oil
chocolate cake with orange filling. If I hadn't known it was
vegan I wouldn't have guessed in a thousand years.
Anyway, I'm a fan of chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and
an orange filling reminiscent of orange marmalade.
Not a sheet cake. It's just not as lovely a presentation.
Mr. Q is a flourless chocolate torte fan.
