       Happy Anniversary Viking I

       Today is the 50th anniversary of the Viking I Mars probe's
       launch.  It is the first probe to successfully land on Mars (the
       USSR had got several down, but they all either crashed or
       stopped working in a very short time).  It landed on Mars July
       20, 1976, which happened to be my mother's birthday.  I recall
       she was thrilled, calling it a birthday present from NASA.
