I think this is very much a matter of personal preference.
But I can recommend an independent burger place in Chicago:

Whataburger is pretty good. Anybody ever had Blake's Lotaburger
in NM. I hear they have a good green chile burger.
I figured out (for me) the main difference between Chik Fil A
and Popeye's chicken sandwiches. Chik Fil A is consistent.
They are exactly the same every time. Popeye's sandwiches are
inconsistent. I've had good ones and bad ones. I don't think
Popeye's is fresh. You ever notice that they have to walk in
the back to get it?

Chick fil a is consistent in quality and customer service.
I haven’t had enough Popeye’s chicken sandwiches to rate the
consistency but I would be surprised if it’s fresh. I think I
assume food is frozen unless otherwise advertised and why would
they not advertise that if it’s true?

I'm calling In and Out as local, as I think they're only on the
west coast, and Arizona (IIRC)
What I like best about them is their meat is never frozen, the
fries were whole potatoes 30 minutes before they became your
fries. If you get a chance to visit, ask about their unpublished
menu. Protein style has no bun and is wrapped in lettuce. Animal
style fries have cheese melted on top (and maybe grilled
onions?) I don't know what else is on their unpublished menu,
but it's definitely a thing.
And that is my contribution for both categories, as I haven't
been to a BK, McDs, Wendy's since In and Out came to town :-)
Just an FYI, 5 Guys advertises similar to In and Out, Fresh,
never frozen, etc. I haven't tried them because they are way
more expensive than I&O.
[/quote]
Ill fully admit this is very provincial and Midwest Nice of me,
but I find secret menus to be a turn off.

I don't mind a secret menu as long as it is ACTUALLY a secret
menu, reserved for family, friends, and long-time regulars. Not
anyone who walks in off the street and says "so tell me about
the stuff you make that you don't list on the menu for everyone
to order". Then it's just "Playing Annoying Games with Your
Customers"

Noted for future consumption.
One of my brothers lives walking distance to that, okay maybe
short drive distance, going to send it to him.

I don't know either of those. I'm a sucker for waffle fries.
Also these things called Jojo potatoes that you can sometimes
get at fried chicken places.

Jesus take the wheel, Jojo would think they were named after
her.
We don’t have Checkers or Rally’s here that I recall, but their
fries are in the freezer section and are pretty good for frozen
and baked fries.
When it comes to fast food I like Arby’s because they have the
sliders which is just enough food with two sides (curly fries
and jalapeño peppers). Also, my kids are totally suckers for
slider sized sandwiches.
