Have a Hoot!
By: animaniactoo Date: September 28, 2021, 5:26 pm

When we get closer to Holiday time, I expect we will want to do
a regular Holiday Hoot. But in the meantime, let's play with
some other kinds of stories!
Suggestions for future hoots also welcome, I will reference back
to what's here when setting up the next one whenever that is.
Please select all options you are interested in/that work for
you. You can change your vote up until the end of the poll in 3
days from... Now.
If you would like your contribution to remain anonymous, you can
send it to me via PM and I'll post it in the thread, and will
ask some of the other mods to be available for that purpose
also. I promise that I will have forgotten who contributed what
within 2 weeks anyway.

I could see a vacation or travel hoot. But I also don’t think we
want todo too many since part of the fun is that they are not a
regular thing.

I have some great travel stories. Agree that not doing these too
often will make them more special.

I find kid stories amusing. And pet ones like this:
I had offered to puppysit for Oldest's exGF (who is like a
daughter to me even now) but that was before we got a kitten.
So she brought her bull terrier mix over to see how she got
along with Kitten.
Imagine if you will a middle aged woman holding a four month old
kitten as a bull terrier mix walks up to the door. Kitten
begins to make alarming noises, which is expected. Dog begins
jumping up and down, also not unexpected. Kitten full-on freaks
out and does his best imitation of a halloween decoration and
climbs onto the very top of my head, where he balances by
digging in his claws. By this time the noises have passed
"alarming" and gone to "tornado warning" level.
Thinking to get Kitten to feel more secure, I reach up to get
him off the top of my head (he can't feel safe teetering there,
right?) and in between the hissing and spitting and yowling he
bites the living shit out of my hand. Oop, my bad.
So now I am bleeding like a stuck pig, I have a tornado siren
crossed with a halloween decoration perched on the very top of
my head, and the dog is still jumping and now she is barking
too.
So I keep my back against the wall (so Kitten doesn't fall off
my head) and I sidle very slowly into the family room and slowly
bend my knees (pretending Kitten is a glass of water that I
mustn't spill) until he is able to jump onto the back of the
sofa whereupon he immediately decamps into the open (screened)
window behind a curtain, where I can see him still about three
times his usual size threatening to kill us all.
Phew. Now I can get OEXGF to bring the dog into the kitchen
while I get the copious blood cleaned up and bandage my hand.
After that we all spent some time just being in the same space
and everyone calmed down quite a bit. Kitten never completely
let his guard down but he at least got to where you could pet
him, and Dog and I strolled on leash all around my downstairs,
passing Kitten repeatedly with her attention on me. So I
thought it went pretty well overall.
Except: Later that night I found another bite that I'd missed.
This one hadn't bled much and was starting to hurt so I was a
little afraid it would get infected so I soaked it in hydrogen
peroxide and betadine which, I am here to tell you, turns your
skin a delightful shade of brownish yellow. And then the next
morning Oldest told me that Dog has in fact killed a groundhog
and several squirrels. Hm. Thanks for letting me know, EXGF!
So in the end we decided that it might be best if we work the
problem for another day, maybe one where Kitten weighs more than
four pounds.
Epilogue: everyone was fine, but we never did revisit this, and
now we have LCP so it will probably never happen. Also, no need
to enumerate how many stupid things I did to myself, I already
know.

Alrighty, poll has ended and it looks like the winner is
Funny/Interesting Food/Cooking Stories, so that will be the
subject of our first hoot.
Date was tied, and based on nothing more than the thought that
people might find it hard to manage a Thursday Hoot followed by
a Friday Live Chat day, I'm picking the Sunday date. So this is
your Save the Date/Invitation for Sunday, October 10th, at 1 pm.
Let's have some fun!
