Re: Lena has heartworm and seizures

Thanks for sympathy and mojo. I called our vet this morning and
he said to bring her in so we could start her on meds. I went
inside the office (leaving Lena and Mr. Tacha in the running
car) and let them know I was there and that I didn't want to get
Lena down until it was actually time for her to see the vet. So
Belinda went to tell Dr. Dan I was there and he decided that he
didn't want to stress Lena any further so he just sent the drugs
out to me with orders to call Monday to see if she's any better.
Poor pupper. We took her on an unnecessary car ride when we
could have left her home if he'd told Belinda to tell me he
didn't need to see her after all. I mean, he's the one who told
her to have me bring her in and she mercifully put me in line
before I even loaded Lena in the car.
No seizures getting into or out of the car. We'd worried about
that but it seems OK. Of course, we'd given her a trazadone
before loading her up, so at least she was pretty doped up for
the ride, wait, and ride home.
She is now on Levitiracetam 3x a day for the rest of her life,
probably.

Aw, poor Lena. Seizures are always scary.
How old is she and what kind of dog? All my best canine mojo to
you and to Lena. 💕

She's 1/2 doberman, some lab and some other doggo. She looks
like a black lab, while her sister looks more like a Rhodesian
ridgeback (although it doesn't show up in her DNA, but the color
and the funky ridge of hair growing the wrong way are there).
They are just shy of 4 1/2 years old, having been born just
before Christmas in 2020.

Are seizures somewhat common in dogs? This is maybe the 3rd dog
I’ve been aware of in the last year or so.

That's a good question. None of the other dogs I've owned in my
entire life have had seizures, but one of my brother's dogs did.
This is new territory to me.

🤞 that the meds work.
And that they’re not too expensive!
Sasha is on 2 meds and I think they run around $55 a month.

Looks like we got all the way through today without a seizure.
Hoping that the meds and the being back in our old routine help.
I mentioned the seizures to a friend at dinner and was regaled
with a story about how his dog had them and the vet just
encouraged him to put her down. Um...
Mercifully, Dr. Dan is not like that -- and also, it sounds like
friend's dog never got treatment when the seizures started?
Because he never mentioned medication for his poor pupper at
all.
At least she takes her pills well as long as the pill pockets
are available. And Bess loves that she gets a blank pill pocket
when Lena takes her meds.

Poor Leenybopper's saga continues. No more seizures since the
day of three. We've scheduled the heartworm shot for the 15th,
and then the next two will follow shortly after that BUT:
Lena has some sort of wound on her shoulder that she keeps
clawing at. It starts to heal over and then she scratches the
scab off. So back to the vet this AM.
Got there about 9:45, left just before 2 (so home in time for
the seizure meds). She now has had two more injections, another
set of pills to add to her ever-growing drug habit, and some
spray goo to spritz onto the wound. Depo Medrol and baytril to
deal with the immediate issue, and thevetricin VF spray might be
easier to get on that wound than the wipies are (she's been a
wriggle-pup since puppyhood). We talked about how these new
drugs might interact with her seizure meds and her trazodone
(they shouldn't).
So if anyone can spare a bit of mojo for my bad-luck pupper,
we'd both appreciate it.
