acceptable birth certificate. My birth certificate is entirely
in German, and that apparently fails the rules. Fortunately, I
got a passport about 20 years ago (that's a long story) and used
that in place of the birth certificate. I have to give the
Maryland MVA full credit. I made the appointment. I walked in to
the office 3 minutes ahead of time; I was called to the desk one
minute later; and I walked out with RealID license three minutes
after that. Seriously - I was all done one minute after the
       appointment time.

Okay, I'm an idiot. (But you knew that already.) What I actually
walked out with that day was the receipt. RealID licenses can
only be manufactured at the state's "secure license center" and
       mailed to you.
But I was still impressed by the MVA service.

it was a RealID. When I had to get my driver's license renewed
a couple of months later, I got a RealID one. I haven't been on
a domestic US flight since. I guess it's a backup, just in case
my passport is lost, expired, or confiscated by a fascist
government. It wasn't that hard to collect the paperwork for us
       and our appointments went smoothly.

Apparently the problem is they don't have the means at the MVA
to validate whether a German birth certificate is "authentic" or
forged. It looks nothing at all like a birth certificate issued
in the US - the "stamp" on it is a postage-stamp type thing
stuck on it. Not a seal embossed with a notary gadget or
anything. I would have needed my FS-240, "Report of the Birth of
a US Citizen Overseas." It was easier to bring the passport.
(The FS-240 was one of the many things I used to get the
passport, but as I said that's a long story and I have not had
enough coffee or beer for that yet today.)

This. My RealID driver's license fits neatly into the
compartment of my wallet designed for carrying it. My passport
book doesn't fit neatly anywhere except my laptop bag. I'd much
rather carry the license than the passport, if given the option.

I use the passport card as a second form of ID. It fits in the
same compartment as my RealID DL. The proper passport book is
in our safe deposit box at the bank.

It's a card -- DL sized, that is essentially that information
page on your passport. It has the same image, as well as your
personal info and (I think) the same number as your passport
does, but I can't verify that because passports are in the bank
at the moment. The back has a barcode and says "PASSsystem" on
       it.

It's very limited in terms of where you can use it for
international travel, but works fine as a second form of
       government-issued ID.

I got my Real ID in February 2020 when my driver's license
needed renewing. I don't remember having to produce any
documents at my local DMV. I had replaced a lost and expired
passport 2 years prior, so I had obtained a certified copy of my
birth certificate from my home county in Texas for that process.
It is possible I had my passport and/or birth certificate with
me at the DMV that day and I just don't remember.
What I remember most is being ecstatic about the new photo! I
hated the older photo on my original Oregon driver's license
from 2012. The current one is much better.

If you fly into either of these countries, you have to have an
       actual passport.

I didn’t bother with the read ID before because I have a valid
       passport.
But- my license expires this july so I have to renew, and I’m
going for the enhanced version. Have an appointment on 5/19 at
7:30 am. I am NOT a morning person, but am trying not to take
time off work for this. Wish me luck on the photo. I think my
current one is 20 years old.
I have the eye exam form from my doc (needed a check up anyway).
I have the form filled out and saved on my computer. I ordered a
new social security card since I can’t find mine. I hope they
don’t need an original marriage certificate because ours is in
the Dominican Republic. I don’t think I will since everything
else has my married name on it. 🤞
I feel for the DMV workers.
