I’m displaying my lack of tech knowledge here so go ahead and
laugh if you want to.
Is there any chance this is partly because we have a lot of
stuff on this site? I keep noticing for example that the Wordle
thread is over 1000 pages. I know in the world of data storage
and stuff this is tiny so just asking.
I would never laugh at you. 😊
No.
Storage or data (in the cloud, on the server platform, or
wherever our data is stored) does not get transmitted, only the
link to the resource. The resource is available when you click
the link to it.
Think of Amazon, the largest public facing website I can think
of. All those items would make your browsing experience a real
slog if the actual resource, in this case probably pictures of
the items and a description, came across the network.
The likely causes of any slowdowns we experience are the high
number of bots accessing the site. The amount of bandwidth
allocated to this site from the host plays a part in the speed,
but we've been here long enough to get a feel for the normal
range of speediness. What we're experiencing now doesn't compare
to the response times from even a couple of months ago.
It's been my experience that if there's an entity trying to
break into your website/resources, they won't give up easily. I
had a server that was only a "pass-through" resource. It ran a
program that took your library card from our public facing
website and validated it against the patron database and then
presented the resource (from a 3rd party website/database) to
you. It had no data of its own, yet was hacked. Since there was
nothing there, I wiped the hardware and proceeded to reinstall
from the OS up. WHILE I was rebuilding the new server, the
hackers were back!
Hackers don't give up. We'll probably be dealing with this for a
bit.
hurray for techies like our NBT!! you understand tech stuff so
we don't have to : D
just curious: any clue why this kind of forum site would be a
bot/hack target ? Is there credit card data stored? what's
here that's tempting bad guys to go after?

I believe that as with FB and other social media, it's

Hackers send out their bots to find out what's here. If there's
so many that we're being overwhelmed, it's effective in that way
also.
Why do they do it? Because they can and they're not honorable
people.

Ever notice that you start getting ads or "recommended for you"
feeds that just "happen" to be on a subject that we've talked
about here? I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's bots.

What I'm noticing the most is holdup when I "react" to a post,
or "view" the reactions to it.
I get the "Loading..." for a few moments and then it does
continue, but that's where my lag mostly is. So I think there
may be a "fetch" issue happening with the "Awesome Reactions"
(that's the term for the reaction buttons).
**However, due to the continued reports of issues despite
everything working smoother overall, I have posted back to the
thread on the support forum notifying that they should check
this thread here**

I momentarily get a page can't be displayed.[s] I will try to
get a screen shot, but it goes by pretty quick[/s].
Agree [member=1]animaniactoo[/member] most of the time the lag
is in the rating.

It's very slow on my iPhone XR. IOS 18.something.
New York/Western Long Island and in Manhattan. Mostly.
I haven't noticed the same issue when using my laptop/computer.

For the past couple of weeks I've had this error (it happens
when I use Tor to connect). Sometimes it happens frequently
enough that I just give up

Happens when I'm using Firefox also, I discovered
I get it randomly, shifting from page to page or really any
