I can see where someone would conclude that showers perpetuate
the traditions hierarchy with women on the bottom.
But you can also look at them as women banding together to
support a sister. I’m in this second group.

The last shower I went to involved homemade horchata served out
of a slow cooker. Also, babies. That I got to hold. It was a
good day.

And I especially like the idea of a display type, so that all
those who want to can gush to their hearts content.
(but the fact that the LW was bothered by the fact that parents
sent a gift in their daughter's name is ridiculous. For all
anyone knows, she may have said, "Things are crazy for me at the
moment. Please spend X$ and I will pay you back)

Tee Bee Aytch, she reminds me of my mom. All of the bitterness,
none of the healing.
I'm sorry her ex-husband cheated on her and the marriage
imploded. I don't know why she expects anyone who met them after
the divorce to care about any of that.

I think it's unfair to call that LW cheap.
There are lots of other bad things you could fairly call her
instead.

Oh I love an update.
Poor LW has had her answer on normal neighbourhood operations.
And their pluses and minuses!!
I think Hax is right about a follow up. Could even be a card
(less interaction; give it to your relative next you see them to
pass on or stick it in the mailbox). "Rough week with work/dogs
and then the emergency surgery. So grateful you helped with
poor Fluffy."
I'm not sure the LW should housesit again. But if she does she
has the lay of the land now.
