If people submit questions in advance, you'd think CH could log
in a little early and have some responses ready to roll. That's
what other live-chatters do.

That would take her away from her core responsibilities, silly
goose!

Mother of the groom: this LW is deeply unhappy, and trying to
take it out on the son's wedding.
She doesn't want to pay? No problem; she has no obligation to.
But just keep your mouth shut about others paying; it's their
choice not yours.
My dirty lens: I just paid the deposit on the reception venue
for middle's wedding next year. Yeah, I lost the "discussion"
with my wife and I'm paying :-)

Wait a minute. If Bonnie is not "the exact type of woman he
finds most attractive" then her relationship isn't going to
last, is it?
Something seems off there.

I've dated guys like this. They zero in on your insecurities
and make incessant comments about how attractive women are who
look different than you. It wouldn't surprise me if he saw a
photo of her and her bff and said "oh wow, she's gorgeous, she's
my DREAM woman..." as part of driving a wedge and poking the
insecurities at the same time.

She listed way too many examples of how her feelings were hurt.
I checked out halfway through reading. She sounds bitter.

"Shortly before the pandemic, my son started dating a woman he
is now engaged to. I do not know her very well because I was
sticking to the rules and avoiding socializing."
What? This is a rule? I'm not terribly well versed on etiquette
but I've never heard of that.

Pretty harsh on mother of groom. Her angst and sadness are
understandable, whether objectively justified or not.
I sense a worry that those who ARE contributing financially are
going to be closer to the nuptial couple, and that's why she's
dwelling on the multi-day plans -- more events = more $$
involved = more opportunities for the other parents to deploy
largess.

I think she means in-person socializing while we were all shut
down more or less.
