       Dune

I've never read the book. Should I?
DC is hyped for the movie, wants to see it on a big screen, but
is leery of sitting in a crowd. So...we rented out a theater!
The guest list is short and everyone on it is vaccinated. It
wasn't nearly as expensive as I thought it would be either!

I'm a fan of that genre in general but I found the book kind of
dry (no pun intended), but it would be probably be worth reading
       before seeing it.
Renting out a theater sounds really fun!

I'm usually a big fan of "read the book first," but if you've
rented out a theater and such, I'd say read the book after.
That's based on my usually loving the book and being
disappointed by the movie; so it seems to me more fun to go
enjoy the movie and then enjoy a book that's even better. It
also helps save the disconnect that can occur when I read a book
and form an image of a given character, then see something quite
       different on screen.

I'm not a big fan of read the book first. I agree that seeing
the movie first is usually way better for both experiences.
The only exception which springs to mind is "Hidden Figures"
which was an excellent film but much as I tried I could not like
the book or even finish it.
There are a lot of movies I refuse to see because I loved the
book so much. Dune isn't really one of them but it is
definitely a book with a ton of subplots which will never make
the movie, so I wouldn't read it before seeing the movie but
rather after. Enjoy the movie for what it is.

I really didn't like the first movie enough to ever read the
       book.
It is one of my brother's favorite book, so I feel like i've
       read it vicariously.

It's a book that I tried to read many many years ago and didn't
manage to get into, which is pretty rare for me... so that's
what I've got fwiw. I would probably watch the movie in an
attempt to try and figure out what all the love is about, even
if it isn't exactly the fullness of the book.

       I'll need a full report on Timothee Chalamet's hair (from you;
       doubt DC will notice/care).

I tend to describe the lynch/smithee movie as "gloriously
awful." It's a terrible version of the story, with dialogue no
human being ever would voluntarily say (cf Harrison Ford's
remark to Lucas, "You can write this shit, but you sure as hell
can't say it!")-- but the cast manages to say it anyway, and it
       doesn't bore.

       I'm so sorry but I will also not notice/care. That's a whole
       baby. He's nephew-shaped.
Now, his onscreen dad on the other hand? DROOL.
(Oscar Isaac for those playing along at home)
