I agree it is interesting. However as a person with a
significant reaction to wheat, there are a lot of vegetarian
foods that contain wheat - some obvious (pasta) and some not
(soups, broth, fake meats.) Selecting a veg option at many
events will result in a plate of pasta. So it can be
       complicated.

And I don't handle cheese well and frequently the veg option is
       something covered in cheese.

We eat a lot less red meat than we used to. Until a couple weeks
       ago.
Mr J went for his annual doctors appt and found out he's still
low in iron. It started when he fractured his hip and had
surgery. So I've added more red meat back in along with other
high iron foods. I just know I can get him to eat more red meat
than I can dark leafy greens.

I find more and more often, the vegetarian option is also the
vegan option (and sometimes the gluten-free option too), I
assume out of a desire to have only one "special" meal.
But if vegetarian meals are more of the default, I'd expect
there to be a lot more variety, instead of only one option like
is typical. Just how like now, when meat is the default, there
are plenty of meat dishes with and without cheese, etc., on the
majority of menus. So I think not having just the one "veg
option" would make this sort of thing much less of an issue.

Raisins are surprisingly high in iron for their size/portion.
Feed him a mini snack pack a day...

I was thinking more of places like weddings - (chicken, beef,
vegetarian options) or work lunches (meat or vegetarian pasta
       dishes).
And there are still a LOT of restaurants where there is only a
single thing that I can eat if I can't eat wheat. There are
typically a lot more vegetarian options than gluten free
options. Especially the restaurants that have wheat in every
single soup and in all the salad dressings - which is pretty
common in a lot of small towns. The restaurants in the towns
outside of New Orleans last year were like that - nothing
available that wasn't breaded or served on a bun - vege burgers,
pizza, nothing gluten free. Even the beans often had wheat. Or
they'd have a fish dish but couldn't make without the soy sauce
       which had already been added.

Also cook in cast iron if you have it.

He likes Raisin Bran for breakfast and has stepped that up.

We're mostly vegetarian and I found it was easiest to add an
iron supplement to the omega-3 and vitamin D and meds I already
take every day. I also aim to eat a lot of leafy greens, etc...
       but this is easy insurance.
