       fun gadgets
By: Queenie Date: September 21, 2021, 9:03 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I hope we can use this space to talk about stuff we love or hate
in our kitchens, or have questions about.
Yesterday someone suggested an air fryer. Does anyone have one
they absolutely love? Bought but can't stand? Why?
I was pricing them yesterday and they seem pretty big and
unwieldy. I do not have counter space for any more gadgets
which live permanently on the countertop, and an air fryer is
mostly going to get used on football Sundays, if at all.
What can you do in your air fryer besides chicken wings? How
much use does yours get? Are they a pain to clean?

We have the Ninja 7 in 1 that is like an air fryer, pressure
cooker, crock pot, saute, and some other things. We use the air
fryer or pressure cooker feature almost every day. It is huge -
it looks like Darth Vader's helmet but I have put the other
appliances away and it sits alone on the counter.
Rick makes amazing chicken tenders in it and it makes the most
amazing salmon - nice and crispy on the outside. I use a lot of
Skinnytaste recipes in it. She has an entire cookbook and
portion of her web site dedicated to healthy air fryer recipes.
The pressure cooker is awesome for beans, soups, stews, etc.
Especially when you are short on time. I think when we do our
kitchen remodel in January/February we will use that appliance a
ton when we don't have an oven.
Tangential - I just ordered a Vitamix. It arrives tomorrow. It
may be the 2nd appliance on the my counter!

Our air fryer (5qt Ninja Max) has done chicken wings a few
times, with mixed success. It's good for doing french fries
quickly, good for shrimp & veggies, and I haven't branched out
       much beyond that.
The rice cooker was awesome when I was cooking rice, because I
could put fish in the steamer basket and get twice the cooking
out of the same steam. I had to cut rice mostly out of my diet,
though. Type 2 is a harsh master.

I got my Vitamix at a bridal brunch 9 years ago and it still
works like the day I opened the box. Totally worth it.

So I keep reading these reviews online and I kinda don't think
it's worth it. They're all like "it takes the place of your
toaster oven too!" but I don't have or want a toaster oven.
"You can cook stuff you'd put in your oven!" but I have, you
       know, an oven.
I have so many gadgets already and most of them I never use. I
need to throw away my coffee roaster, citrus juicer, and, God
help me, turkey fryer except that Mr. Q would kill me. Also my
electric wok and my ice cream maker and my mini crock pot
because I'm never going back to the old kind of crock pot with
no timer on it. Also my instapot because I hate it.
I feel like a Luddite: all I need is my oven, my grill and my
       cast iron skillet!

We are planning on getting this in the semi-near future. My
sister has one, and in general, it really DOES replace all those
       other things.

Plus you can watch your cookies bake with the internal camera
and the app on your phone. And the app will remind you when it's
time to take them out. And things like that.
Small kitchen gadgets I love: Microplane graters. The best thing
since sliced bread. Seriously. I have discovered that using the
smallest size above the zester to grate garlic provides you with
garlic that is essentially minced and takes a lot less time and
effort than mincing garlic by hand or using the kitchenaid
       mini-chopper we have.
My cookie spatula. Small, silicone coated, the perfect size to
pull cookies off the sheet without hitting the other cookies.
       Perfection.

I don't know how I survived over fifty years without a
microplane. And agree, I haven't chopped garlic since.

I’m going this way mostly because I have so much less counter
space. I have my coffee maker out and my blender and Kitchen Aid
mixer in a lower counter. I do miss keeping my blender out but
I’m okay with my Kitchen Aid away.

I should find somewhere to put my kitchenaid. I used to use it
weekly but since we're all low carb now I mostly use it on
holidays or before a party. God it weighs a ton. On my counter
I have, and will not part with: kitchenaid, microwave, coffee
makers (nespresso and grind 'n brew), canisters for coffee, tea
and flour, fruit bowl, large canister 'o utensils and there is
just no way I have room for anything else.
Toaster, blender, waffle maker, food processor, frou-frou knife
sharpener, crock pots, instapot all live in cabinets or closets
and those are full too. knives are in a drawer.
The longer I live here the more stuff accumulates, is what.

I used my mandoline the other day to make lasagna "noodles" from
zucchini and then to make my favorite slaw:

I don't use it very often but when you need a mandoline nothing
else will work as well or as quickly. Definitely one of my more
       useful gadgets.
