I figured it out today!
It took me a long time and I didn't copy the result but I did
get it right.
I'm kind of figuring out the grid.

The extra factor made this one a little tougher for me. I think
I'm getting better, even if my time isn't improving.
And I just realized that once I've completely analyzed a clue I
can click on it to cross it out.

This is a steep learning curve. I had to find an online site
(reddit as it turned out) to learn how to use the decoder ring,
because nothing was working.
[/quote]
I still haven't figured out the decoder ring. I just solved it
as if it was a cryptogram, which seemed to work, once I figured
out that one of the words was someone's name.

Today's said the decoder ring wouldn't work so I didn't even
try.

I initially tried it as a cryptogram, too. But it never occurred
to me to think that one word would be a name. Good thinking!
FFR if you want to use the decoder ring, use your cursor to
rotate the outside (I kept clicking on the wedges, and it didn't
work) ring. It will take you through all the codes and
eventually one will show up in English.
However, I see that today's puzzle says the decoder won't work.
I'm assuming I'll have to dust off my cryptogram skills.
eta: Oh, not necessary I see. More like the first couple of
puzzles where the text is more obvious.

Yep, I glanced at one of the small words and saw how it worked
and that was that.

I agree that the extra variable complicated things. It didn't
help that I was sloppy and misinterpreted one of the clues.
oops.
