Missing hiker found alive after more than five weeks in
       wilderness

Wow! I am happy he is out of the wilderness and in the
hospital. I hope he recovers well - should do because he is so
young. He was way up there in the far northern Rockies.

Yeah. Canadian Rockies. I wonder how the search effort a
couple of months ago missed him! Was he trying to hide?
Perhaps we'll learn more when he's well enough to talk easily.
Beautiful country, as long as you're well-fed and correctly
       clothed for conditions.

That definitely sounds like there is more to the story since it
doesn't necessarily sound like he was lost.

Interesting story. I wonder if he just needed to Get Away for a
       while?

This guy just sounds lost, not like he was evading being found.
It's honestly pretty easy for SAR to miss you if there's a very
large search area, which was almost certainly the case given the
       length of his trip.
The first search I was ever on, we packed up and left after a
long weekend of a very large search effort. He was found 19 days
later (alive!). I think it's pretty hard to conceptualize just
how many people and how much time is needed to search areas of
       backcountry.

for 10-15 days. Then he moved down the valley, and built a camp
and shelter in a dried-out creek bed. He then made his way to
where he flagged down the two men.

If you're lost but with your car, staying with the car is
usually your best bet. Easy to see from the air, and roads and
trails are usually searched first. And there's some chance some
other vehicle will come by. Maybe he was out of drinking water
and that's why he went to the creek? But why wouldn't he just
fill his bottles and go back?
Glad he made it out. I hope we get a fuller story eventually.
