What's for Thanksgiving? Apparently a deep clean of the utility
room. Why the day before Thanksgiving and not next week is
something only my husband could tell you.
I wanted to just go for clean and stuff out of the way for now,
but he's all gung-ho to redo everything in there because of the
new washer, I guess.
And they say women are illogical!

So....does anyone making turkey put the stuffing in the turkey
to bake? Or do you cook it outside of the turkey?
We ended up in quite the conversation about that last night and
wondered what you all think!

I have never added stuffing inside the bird. I learned to make
dressing from my grandmothers. Both of them made dressing
separate from cooking the birds, I think mostly because there
wouldn't have been enough stuffing for everyone.
Now I want my maternal grandma's famously delicious cornbread
and buttermilk biscuit dressing!

Besides the standards - turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and
cranberry sauce - Mrs. Bay is making corn pudding and a
carmelized mushroom-and-sweet-potato orzo dish, and I'm smoking
a ham and salmon for our pescatarian guests. Dessert will be
pumpkin and pecan pie and cranberry cake.
Cranberry cake? Sounds fascinating!
It's really good - we love having the leftovers for breakfast!
Mrs. Bay will make it for brunch sometimes in fact. It's kind of
like a coffee cake texture with cranberries studded throughout.
And the recipe will be over in the recipe thread, right?

I never do it in the bird. To get it hot enough to be safe you
have to overcook the breast meat.

I recently learned you can make stuffing with a mix of biscuits
and cornbread. I am not making stuffing this year, but one day I
will have this!
Currently I've got turkey stock and wine reducing on the stove
for gravy.

I always stuff the bird, I think the stuffing gets too dried out
if not inside the bird plus it adds flavor. I make homemade GF
cornbread and crumble it and toast it so my stuffing doesn't
start out as dry as when you buy the bags of stuffing
breadcrumbs to use - but still it gets dry if not inside the
turkey.
For the record, I always intentionally overcook my turkey (and
roast it upside down) because we like it that way. And I check
the temp of the stuffing so as not to make anyone sick.

I have always put the stuffing in the turkey and baked it that
way. All my life. Any stuffing that didn't fit in the turkey was
baked separately.
However, we learned [s]a good[/s] the best way to slice and
serve a turkey and we're actually going to cut the parts off the
turkey first and then bake. The cooking time is greatly reduced
and the white and dark meat both get the time they need. The
dark meat needs to cook longer.
The method for cutting a turkey is similar to the way we'll be
cutting it before baking, so the slicing and serving should be
easy.
We got all this from Chef Jean Pierre on youtube. He's got a lot
of videos about Thanksgiving dishes. Highly recommend

I'm planning to make stock for my after Thanksgiving turkey
chowder. After Mr carves up the turkey for baking, I'll take the
rest of the carcass and make stock.

Outside for decades now. I actually like my stuffing to get
slightly crispy anyway.
