What the heck is "Western Formal"?

Besides "no jeans, please", there is no clue what this dress
code means. Am I supposed to tog up as a prairie princess? Down
here I thought formal meant a nice sports coat over (clean)
jeans. Otherwise it's just suit and tie like usual, no? Wear
       cowboy boots with the suit?
Not that I'm going to wear a dress anyway....

Interesting. I had to Google it to see. Yes, I think you are
correct. Formal clothes with a western flair, so a suit with a
cowboy hat, bolo tie, and cowboy boots. Google gave me this
site for an idea about how to dress the ladies:

Yeah, I think I'll just do my normal work clothes. It's a
fund-raiser and they want me to spend money so I doubt seriously
if they'll turn me away at the door. And if they do, then at
least I will not have to socialize with a bunch of strangers who
may or may not have their vaccinations and/or wear a mask.
Looks like "Western formal" translates into wannabe cowboy
       casual to me.

I'd ask someone involved with the arrangements. It's not really
an expression we use over here but in my experience of going to
embassy events in different countries "Western Formal" means
the most formal of clothing worn in the western, i.e. first,
world. Which means long dress for women and at least dinner
jacket/tuxedo for men (and quite often for men it means white
tie). Do you have a contact phone number/email?

💜 I love the juxtaposition of Wild West fancy hotel
boots and bolos with the White House dance floor gowns and
       tuxes. 🤠 👸🏻

I went to the Texas inaugural ball several years ago "Black tie
and boots" is the theme. It really is just cowboy boots and a
hat with a suit. Some bolo ties, some bow ties, some regular
       ties.
It's easier for women, you can still just show up in a dress!
       Some women wore western hats.
What I hate about this dress code is that for most of the
population, a lot of purchasing is going to have to occur to
make it happen. Boots and hats are expensive and you will
probably not wear them much again.

I could get into this more than a wannabe cowboy casual thing. A
friend of mine used to work at a hospital that loved to have
"Western" themed causal events and it was always hard for me to
decide what to wear since I don't like wearing jeans. I'd always
end up going in some sort of LBD with turquoise jewelry. Give me
good old black tie any day.

HaHa! Yes to the not wearing cowboy boots and cowboy hats
again. Might as well just get a horse, you're half way there!
I hate unclear dress requests and used to REALLY hate work
events where the person in charge required clothing that he had
and many of us did not - which required a shopping trip for me.
I'm specifically recalling how difficult it was for me to find
khaki pants, which were required for an event at short notice.
Sigh... And they were NOT a good look on me, a 50 year old
female, when I finally found a pair. Ugh. And I never wore
       them again.

I wore a vest over a mattress-ticking striped shirt. Given they
specified "no jeans" I was a bit disappointed to see a large
percentage of the attendees wore jeans. There were a few cowboy
hats and a lot of boots, but down here boots are a pretty common
       thing, as were the hats.
I showed willing, I guess. Wouldn't have had time to buy
anything anyway -- got the invite/tickets the day before the
       event.
I have established that Western formal is not a look that I want
to cultivate, so just as well I didn't have time to waste money
on clothes I'd wear maybe once.
