I don't blame you, KD, and I'm the one here with four dogs !
It's a labor of love but I totally get how it's not for
everyone...
And though I didn't write the letter here, I swear, I also have

Wildly inflammatory language like "she's willing to kill her
kids to kowtow to your parents" is making this situation
logarithmically worse.
Go ahead and calculate the risks and act accordingly. Me, I'd
ask my pediatrician for advice and go with that.
Mind, I'm completely fine with deciding not to see the grands.
But equating seeing them with a death sentence is inaccurate.
People complain about Amy's stance all the time, but Hax is
aaaaaaaaaaaaalllll the way at the other end of the spectrum.
The risk of Delta to small children is known. Learn it and
decide. Is it greater than leaving them un-seatbelted? Greater
than taking them on a roller coaster? Greater than driving them
to preschool? Whatever it is, it's a number and that number is
known.

I’m calling the Mateo letter.
I don’t think this is genuine. Cultural appropriation of baby
names is a thing, I remember Cav mentioning this a few months
ago in reference to Asher and Jewish culture.
I think this person wants to discuss this issue and/or take
Carolyn’s temperature on it so they fabricated this and
submitted it. Carolyn artfully dodged discussing names and
culture appropriation and for that I salute her.

This is Carolyn at her worst, when she doesn’t write an answer
to a LW but instead makes a larger point she just feels like
making.

I also think virtue signaling is a thing too. I can totally see
this happening. They think it's a show of respect, not cultural
appropriation.

Wait, what? We're not allowed to name our kids whatever we
want? Does this go in both directions? If I can't name my kid
Ariel or DaVonn, does that mean that "they" can't name their kid
James or Melinda?

People aren't naming the way they used to. They're making them
up, changing the spelling of traditional names, using things
that sound Latin or French or Asian. And all the Irish name
spellings. If someone names their kid Mateo, it might be
anything other than that they live near Latinos.

It is just really sticky ground.
I know this in reference to the name Asher, there are at least 3
Asher’s in Chitot’s grade at school. It’s a very popular boys
name right now. It has great significance to Jewish culture. I
think plenty of parents were just like “cool name, I’ll use it.”
Is that right? Is it wrong? Can only members of the group the
name initiated in make that call?
I have no idea, it’s very complicated.
