It’s a whole thing.
This may surprise you, it certainly does me, but I don’t have an
opinion one way or the other. I try to stay out of the way of
the discussion when it happens.
My advice to this LW is to take her question to Baby Center or
another similar website where people will get down in the mud
and debate her allllllllll day and half the night.

I also think virtue signaling is a thing too. I can totally see
this happening. They think it's a show of respect, not cultural
appropriation.

It is just really sticky ground.
I know this in reference to the name Asher, there are at least 3
Asher’s in Chitot’s grade at school. It’s a very popular boys
name right now. It has great significance to Jewish culture. I
think plenty of parents were just like “cool name, I’ll use it.”
Is that right? Is it wrong? Can only members of the group the
name initiated in make that call?
I have no idea, it’s very complicated.

I guess I don't equate religion to culture. Do you have to be
Catholic to name your kid Margaret Mary?

Smelly BF - there are the legendary Steve Jobs stories again. He
was convinced that if he ate a vegan diet high in beta carotene
he'd never need a shower.
He was, um, wrong.
But it took a while before some people worked up the nerve to
tell him that. And even longer to convince him of that.

Melinda's a weird name. I'd avoid it.

I certainly wouldn't name my kid Mateo to make a point. And of
course with me it's all entirely moot because I'm
post-menopausal.
Plus I'm kinda WASP-y and my kids have totally kinda WASP-y
names so whatevs.
I just bristle at it only going one way. No fairs!

spellings. If someone names their kid Mateo, it might be
anything other than that they live near Latinos.

Yep. We have some Korean friends who chose Mateo as their son’s
American name.

When someone tells me what they're naming their kid I always do
the same thing - nod, smile, and say "That's lovely..." whether
I like it or not.
It's not my call to approve or disapprove, and I don't think
anyone is actually looking for an honest answer anyway...

I would not continue dating smelly guy. He'll probably shower
ever less once he's more comfortable around you.

"Mateo"
Oh, come off it. First of all, the Italian version of Matthew is
nearly identical - Matteo.
Second, do you complain about the guy from the Dominican
Republic whose name is "George" instead of "Jorge?" Does the
guy from Russia have to be "Yuriy" or can he be "George?"
Is Sasha Obama a sign of cultural appropriation, since that's a
Russian nickname for Alexander?

Telling someone they smell is like telling them they have bad
breath. I can only bring myself to do this with people I'm
really close to.
