Oh well, somebody will always be disappointed.
There are good reasons for that, as there are several factors to
consider for each instance of traveling smell. That is what
caught my interest, how could they give a constant for this with
so many variables, and of course, they really can't. Even the
speed of sound changes across different media as well as within
a medium (see the SOFAR in the oceans as an example).
I thought the Action Lab dude in the video with the vortex ring
cannon answered it well with some classic classroom
demonstrations, and the video was also jolly good fun, IMHO.

Many many years ago I read a science fiction story about a
species that communicated by emitting smells. The slow rate of
information transfer was part of the plot.
Of course I had to Google this, no hit related to my memory, but
from one of the Star Wars related wikis, the general term for
any of a number of species who sensed their world or
communicated primarily through scent is Olfax.
My wine is at this moment communicating very pleasant thoughts
to me ;)
