       Generations

People seem to be very invested in generational identity. I
personally view the US generations as pop culture shorthand more
than anything else, and I am certain that the cultural
       touchstones blur at the boundaries.
I noticed in the Politics section that there was discussion of
when the Baby Boom generation ended. I have occasionally seen
suggestions for as early as 1961, but 1964 is much more commonly
used. My brother was born in 1943 and my youngest sister at the
very end of 1961. Using the earlier end date would mean that my
generation of siblings spanned Silent Generation, Baby Boom and
GenX. It seems a bit much somehow. The first graph I attach
shows how the total fertility rate jumped at the end of WWII.
1964 was still well within the high part of that curve.
Although total fertility rate is somewhat weird calculation --
see the definition (and apologies for exposing you to an
equation). The second graph shows the actual birth numbers --
       1964 is still high
An additional point of information is that these generational
timespans are very brief. The Baby Boom was 19 years, but
Millennials only have a 16 year span and GenZ is down to 14. In
studies of actual demographics, a generation is about 30 years.
Yes, it's possible to be a grandparent at 32, but many babies
are born to older parents, especially for men.

I wonder if the shorter time spans have anything to do with how
corporations slice and dice their advertising audiences.
I think the age at which someone witnesses a national trauma
(JFK, Challenger, 9/11) can have a big impact on their political
       outlook, though.
       Thanks for posting this topic.
