Interesting. I eat yogurt almost every day, but almost no other
fermented foods. But my recent illness was intestinal and I had
such severe bloating (along with other systems) that I looked
4-5 months pregnant. I had similar symptoms (along with
significant pain) last year and ended up in the ER - where they
found nothing seriously wrong and thought it was probably a
reflux type thing. But I had that very pregnant look and very
distended, hard abdomen. I'm not particularly thin but I'm
pretty fit and don't normally look like that. So I am
experimenting with kombucha, which I'd not had before, and will
see whether it helps me long term. I hope a little bit every
day is helpful - I only like a small glass of it plus it is
expensive.
The kombucha has become my before dinner glass of wine, which is
probably a good switch.
My husband could eat sauerkraut and/or kimchi every day but I
could not.

Yikes! I'm so sorry about your recent illnesses and that
bloating. I hope you find something that gives you relief.
At times, my IBS and really bad GERD symptoms cause bloating
like that, and it is so very uncomfortable. I have measured a 5
- 6" increase in my waist circumference over just a few hours
many times, so I probably look pregnant in the belly too. I
fully get now why my grandma dressed the way she did as she had
some of the same issues. I am like her now, I haven't worm a
waist band that doesn't stretch for over 7 years. I can still
hear my grandma's loud burps because they are now my loud burps,
I kind of like that detail because I think about her almost
every time. :)
I eat a small serving of something fermented almost every day.
I started this in 2019 as my GI doctor suggested. The thing I
noticed within a couple of months was I could eat more water
soluble fiber with milder symptoms than before, but who knows if
correlation = causation. Over time, I have slowly gotten back
to eating more whole grains instead of avoiding them like the
plague. I slowly got beans back too, as long as I limit
servings to 1/2 cup per day, use canned beans, and rinse them
really well. I hated eating GF white bread and GF rice pasta
made from polished rice because it made me feel like my blood
sugar spiked then crashed as if I had eaten donuts for lunch. I
also discovered that too much fermented food caused me those
headaches they wrote about, so I really limit servings to avoid
that problem.
The foods I rely upon most are coconut milk yogurt, sauerkraut,
uncooked miso paste or tofu, olives and other pickled
vegetables, tamari sauce - anything fermented I don't have to
cook and kill off some of those beneficial bacteria to eat. I
mean like 5-6 olives chopped up and used as topping is a small
serving of fermented food for me, and I usually have 1-2
servings per day. I really like kombucha, but things with
bubbles aggravate my reflux so I don't drink it often. Also, as
much as I love black tea, green tea, and white tea, my bloat
symptoms are always better when I stick to rooibos tea instead.
I do 4 days of herbal tea for every 1 day real tea. That helps
too.
I hope you feel better very soon.
