Shaving is tedious and ultimately stupid.

I see beard/no beard the same as I see short/long/no hair. It's
a personal thing, not some weird ploy for dominance (or the
appearance of dominance).

The question is not "Why do men grow bears?" but "Why do some
men spend 5-10 minutes every day making their faces look like
they belong to a preteen?"

For me the question is why do men grow horrible scraggly beards.
I have no objection to a neatly trimmed beard. My husband
usually has one.
But those 10 inch things that look like critters nest in them
give me the willies. I sat next to a guy last night at a dinner
and meeting and his scraggly mess almost made me cringe. We're
both officers in the organization, I didn't have a choice.

Mr. Tacha's beard is reasonably short and kept neatly trimmed.
One of our gaming buddies looks like a stereotypical crazy
prospector. He's a prof at one of the local colleges, for
cripes' sake, you'd think he'd at least keep it neat and tidy,
even if it is long. You'd be wrong. As a student I would find
that so very distracting I couldn't learn. As a gamer, I just
don't look down at that end of the table if I don't have to.

I love it! Thanks for the opinions. :)
Beards out in the world don't bother me much unless they are
actually dirty or have real critters crawling around in there.
I may have a predisposition to accept the fancy hipster shaped
beards, the full sea captain, the Grizzly Adams, and even the
Rip Van Winkle as perfectly acceptable by way of living here (we
have all beardy weirdy types represented in abundance in
Astoria). I know a few men who don't trim but keep their beards
clean, and its okay by me. That same group chuckles under their
breath at men with really fancy and overly oiled beards.
My personal preference for men's facial hair is clean shaven or
trimmed and partial coverage, but if their beard smells perfumed
with scented oils that might be a bit much for me because
perfumes bother me (I don't even wear perfume). The main thing
for me is whatever facial hair they wear can't hurt my sensitive
skin if they want to get anywhere near me with their beard.
Their beard hair has to be long enough to be soft. Whisker
burns suck!
Having said all of that, I empathize with face shaving. I
understand razor burn on the legs really well, and I can't
imagine having razor burn on my face! Poor guys. If I was
male, I would probably have a beard to avoid shaving my face
every day and irritating my skin.
Some men look great with facial hair, others look creepy to me.
That is 100% because the creepy looking ones remind me of my
father.

As long as I don't have to kiss it I have no opinion on a man's
facial hair. None of my business at all.

This may make some rethink the beard thing…
