Amen. I could write a long screed about our for-profit health
       system and over-diagnosis/treatment, but I won't.
WRT breast cancer, my mother was diagnosed with a DCIS - a
self-contained tumor that is incredibly common and highly
unlikely to cause problems during a woman's lifetime, which I
think is what this article was referring to. My mother was in
her late 60s, so was likely to not experience any problems for
her lifetime. But in fact, it was treated, and she died from
that treatment (the radiation damaged her lungs).
Certainly, others have been helped - especially younger patients
with aggressive forms of the disease. But more transparency and
less profit motivation would go a long way to patient
empowerment, looking for better solutions, and less iatrogenic
       illnesses.

There's a lot to be said for communicating honestly with the
patient and letting them make informed judgement calls.
