Give Sasha as much positive attention as possible when she's not
stalking him.

It's Naughty Nori who is not happy. Sasha has decided, in her
infinite wisdom (and because she is a very good girl), that my
lap is way more important to her than some monster parked 6"
away. So is his food.
I have been trying to pet her every chance I get both with and
without Rocket glued to my elbow. I think the problem with
Rocket loose in the bedroom is that she feels she has to defend
the bed. She walks all around the edge growling. And no amount
of petting settles her down. She settles down after he is
crated. I even partially covered it because she will glare at
him and even take a swipe. Poor Rocket.
I think I am just going to crate him at night so Nori feels
comfortable to sleep with me without putting my body parts in
danger. She actually scratched me about a 1/4" from my good eye
when he moved on the mattress and startled her. It's early days
still. I'm shocked that Sasha has adjusted as quick as she has.

Hey - did they share with you his Body Condition Score (BCS)? At
that angle, he looks like a 2 - 3 on the 9 point BCS score, but
a vet should be the one to tell you for certain. I mention this
because he may be more tired than what would be his normal for
his breed and age at this time. Not to say he isn't a calm dog
by nature! Just that as he slowly gains weight and very slowly
and carefully gains muscle and life experience (TM), he may
become a bit more lively. So if you can take advantage of his
good nature and sharp brain (poodles are smart!), this would be
a great time to teach him some of the basics he will need in the
future.
My favorite/most useful commands for Supermutt follows:
On me! (this one saved my sanity - you've met Supermutt, you
know what I mean) This one may be tricky for Rocket since he's
not food motivated. Supermutt and Sidekick are VERY food
motivated!
Down
Sit
Go crate (again, you've met him at home, you know what I mean)
Bonus points if you can work with Rocket now on letting you file
his nails, have him wait at the door for his paws/body to be
toweled off before entering (trust me, do it now, before he
brings the messy outdoors inside), fiddle with his mouth,
examine his ears and generally be touched all over. I realize
it's a PITA, but can you take him to your local vet JUST to walk
on the scale, be loved by the staff and given dog biscuits for
being the best boy ever? No appointment - just so he doesn't
associate the weird smells and sounds with unpleasantness. I
used to do this with earlier dogs, but we got Supermutt in 2021
and it wasn't until this year that we could even go into the
building with Supermutt or Sidekick, so that window has closed.
Sidekick LOVES going to the vet - she knows she will get loved,
snacks, cooed over and if they must trim her nails, well, there
will be still MORE snacks and cooing.
I know, I know - you simply don't have enough to do already! But
adding one or two of the little things and doing them daily will
pay dividends later.
Supermutt also either jingles the collar on the sliding door to
indicate his need to go and pee or stands at the door and barks
at it then looks at us. Maybe you can teach Rocket the same
thing? Hang a bell on the door for him? You jingle it every time
you prepare to go for a walk and if he touches or jingles it,
you put him on his lead and go outside. Even if it's no further
than just outside your door, it's still outside.

I have found the secret treat - chicken. Air-dried chicken also
works.
He is such a good boy. He now goes to sleep on the mattress
next to the bed and barely tries to get up on the bed. I've
decided I just can't let him get in the habit because there are
times I don't even want the cats touching me let alone a big boy
like him. Nori has decided she doesn't need to defend the bed
so all is good
His personality is starting to shine through. He likes to steal
laundry. I was putting the sheets into the washing machine.
The pillow cases were on the floor while I was loading it . So
get the machine started. I turn around and there is Rocket on
the couch with a pillow case looking all pleased with himself.
I had to take him back to the adoption center to get something
looked at and as soon as he realized where he was, his tail was
between his legs. I haven't seen his tail between his legs
since a couple of days after he got with me. Poor puppy. I
think he thought I was taking him back.
They think he is not very under weight and warned me about
putting on too much weight. But every person who has seen him
calls him emaciated. I have special food for him for the
crystals in his urine and he doesn't like it. *Sigh* so I am
mixing it with regular food so I can nutrients into him but also
hopefully get the benefit of whatever specialty food he will
eat.

All kidding aside, it sounds like he's coming along very nicely.

Supermutt steals socks, shirts and other small items, waves them
around like a fan and clearly wants our attention. He
reluctantly, but gently, gives up his attention-getter for pets,
outside time, treats. Clearly he's channeling Supermutt. It must
be catching.
I'm taken aback that they don't see a problem with his weight.
Do you have a few different angles to share? Side, top down,
rear are all helpful. When you run your hands along his ribs,
can you feel them easily or do you have to press in a bit? I
just don't see the muscle tone I would expect on a dog at BCS 3
or 4 (/9), particularly in his hind end.
And of course, he shouldn't be too heavy, nor should he put on
weight too quickly, but he still needs calories to support some
weight and muscle gain. Plus bones! It takes a year to remodel
bone, his are more fragile at the moment too.
Anyway, he's SUPER LUCKY to be hanging at the Ryder house, even
if he is under the rule of the cats. I know they exact tribute
from him.

I have some Fromm wet food which he likes. I throw that in and
he eats the dry kibble. So I'm going to continue to mix in the
wet food and hope that getting nutrients in is just as important
as reducing crystals in his urine.
I spoke very briefly with my own vet about him when I brought in
Nori for her annual exam. Her attitude is if they aren't having
problems urinating and they don't have issues with stones then
the special food is not critical to continued health.
