I never knew we were pronouncing Mount Everest wrong! And yeah,
the better name is the Tibetan one: "Mother Goddess of the
Earth".

I’m sure I’ve said this here before but right on top of my best
travel memories is seeing the top of Mt Everest. In fact that
day we saw 4 of the 5 tallest peaks. And we’d been warned that
due to fog you often couldn’t see anything. But it was sunny,
clear, and we could see for miles.

So true. There are two streets in Portland that are pronounced
differently than the family name. Couch St is pronounced
"Cooch", while the family pronounces their name like the piece
of furniture. Glisan St is (generally) pronounced like Gleason,
while the family pronounces their name like glisten.

The city and UC campus of Berkeley is pronounced like BUR-klee,
but the philospher George Berkeley who it's named after is
pronounced BARK-lee.
