       What are you watching?

Just saw "Respect." And yes, it was blatantly formulaic and
skipped over a bunch of stuff that I would have found
interesting. And Jennifer Hudson is no Aretha.
But wow did I love it anyway. The music was so great.
TV is much worse, I've been reduced to binge-watching 30 Rock
when Mr. Q isn't insisting on a documentary about something
       British.
Brooklyn 99 isn't nearly as funny this year. I get why, but
       still.

I'm coming up on the end of season 6 of Chicago Fire. I never
watched it new, so getting it on peacock is nice.

We have been watching "The Blacklist" on Netflix.
We watched two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery and the 3rd
season just became available on DVD, so I planned to re-watch
the end of season 2, to refresh. It turns out I don't remember
like half of the season 2 at all!
Also, it's hard to stop watching Netfilx to watch Discovery.

watched Frasier. Didn't see all the episodes when it was new.
       It's really really funny.

       Been rewatching Downton Abbey.
It's hard to be a fan of Miss Bunting, the schoolteacher who
made friends with Tom Branson. She's irritating, I agree with
most of the issues she takes a stand on, but that doesn't excuse
harping on subjects where are obviously painful to the host and
most of the other people around the table.
On the plus side, I finally realized what Cora meant when she
said "Let's not divide tonight" at the dinner table. Usually
the women went off together to the drawing room and the men
stayed in the dining room and both discussed subjects that
weren't proper to discuss with the other sex present
(relationships and children vs. money and politics and
business). Cora just decided not to separate like that one
night when there would only be two men left.

We're picking our way through Youtube archives of British
gameshow Pointless. Along with Daikaiju-TV, and several Mystery
Science Theater 3000 channels on Roku.
And Jeopardy!, in the afternoons, which is the only show I watch
in current release. I'm so ready for Smarmy Michael to get off
       my screen.

I've been a bit surprised at what doesn't hold up. Favorite
comedy shows from my childhood like The Carol Burnett Show and
Laugh-In are cringeworthily sexist and racist. Ditto the sexism
on shows like Boston Legal. Seinfeld doesn't feel nearly as
funny as it did at the time. Cop shows look very different post
       George Floyd.

Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Sergeant Voight have always
been fascists right in the tradition of Detective Sipowicz and
many others. They wouldn't last 2 minutes in a real police
       department.

I've been watching The Murdoch Mysteries (Hulu). Detective in
late-Victorian-era Canada, a subtle whiff of steam punk, and not
too challenging, which is perfect as I recover from some
surgery. 17 or 18 seasons, which is great, because as noted by
others there's not much else on right now.
