Three Students Just Deciphered the First Passages of a
2,000-Year-Old Scroll Burned in Vesuvius’ Eruption
The trio used artificial intelligence to decode sections of the
text, which appear to be a philosophical exploration of pleasure
The scrolls in Herculaneum were carbonized when Vesuvius erupted
in 79 AD, and then buried in ash undisturbed until the 19th
century. At first they attempted to unroll the scrolls, but
they were so brittle they broke into crumbs. Wisely, they left
them alone. Now researchers have used CT scans to image the
remains of the ink without needing to unroll the scrolls, and
use AI to help reading the images. They've read about 5% of one
scoll. It's apparently by Philodemus, an Epicurean philosopher,
and it's about enjoying food, drink, and music. (Just like
Haxnuts!) Since most of the library is intact the potential is
substantial for great discoveries as reading them continues.

"t's about enjoying food, drink, and music."
It's always fun until you get buried in lava and ash.

Pretty much proves the truth of the old "Eat, drink and be merry
for tomorrow we shall die".
