LCP gets excited whenever anyone makes any sound of any kind.
But there are a few words that send her OTT, like "birdie" and
"bunny" and "squirrel." These are words we must carefully spell
lest a tiny enthusiastic tornado result.
She also delights in being instructed to "go get it" or "dig it
up."
what scenario would initiate a "dig it up" command ?
(btw if you say chipmunks, i'll just be over here going
lalalalala with my fingers in my ears bc if that's the case i
dont want to know.)

Fear not for the rodents. I mean yeah, it's vole holes and
chipmunk holes, but they're in no danger whatsoever. Prolly
about ten inches away blowing raspberries.

I had forgotten that not all dogs think that Fetch is a fun
game. My sister's bassett just looked at me like I'd lost my
ever-loving mind.

The instructions that came with the dog sitting gig I did in
December told me to say “Time for Fidos dinner. Yummy, yummy”.
Sometime I said it. Other times I skipped the yummy, yummy part.
Either way Fido seemed happy to chow down.
I have had dogs for the better part of my life. And I've NEVER
thought their dinner looked "yummy" - not the dry kibble, not
the canned food, not the soupy chicken breast and rice I cooked
when they had stomach issues, certainly not the small cut up
pieces of cooked turkey giblets. I will admit that the pumpkin
cinnamon biscuits smell good, but I have yet to try one.
I think for the most part I have different food preferences than
my dog - the dog who once snarfed up and swallowed a paper-thin
dead bird from the street while on a short leash and without
breaking her stride. Yum!
We do both like bananas and peanut butter, however.

Not sure I will ever eat canned tuna again after feeding it for
three years to Frankie while she was sick. It's turned into cat
food.

Ok, dogs and vocabulary etc.
I always spelled WALK and HUNGRY, etc, til they all learned how
to spell.
Sara the Sheltie was super protective, and if I snuck in
bathroom, she gently pushed door open at least an inch to spy on
me. Must’ve thought I’d escape through the window. She’d put
her eyeball right up to the crack, like Jack in The Shining.
When I took a bath she frantically licked my arm to dry me off I
guess. Such a good dog.
I only say this as you don't know me, but another dog, I trained
by saying, “ go tinkle, Binkle!”, and
“ go poopadoop”. It did work. She liked rhymes I guess. When I
told a sitter I said this, she looked at me like I was nuts of
course. 😂

Sara the Sheltie is the reincarnation of the person on Datelab
whose date went to the bathroom and escaped out the window...

Reading these posts reminded me that while I was dog sitting in
December I talked to the dog a lot having no people to talk to.
I’d heard stories, probably here, of dogs who understand walk I
automatically switched to jaunt or meander when I’d give him the
days schedule.
“After I finish my coffee and clean up we’ll go for our morning
jaunt. This afternoon I’m going to do some grocery shopping.
Then we can meander around the neighborhood for a while this
afternoon.”

FLIPSIDE TIME
What word, phrase, or action produces the opposite result: a
totally uncooperative animal?
For Ziva, it's "Let's go home." No one has ever moved slower
than Ziva when I say that.

For any cat I have ever had, that word is "no". :)

For Booger the labradog, the only time he didn't cooperate was
if he heard an urgent, "Boogie come here!" when he could see any
body of water. He would come back eventually, but only after a
good swim. He just couldn't help himself, and I couldn't be mad
at him because he was bred to love the water. He was a very
good boy 99.9% of the time.

My dog is very adverse to getting her feet wet. She hates to
walk on the deck outside the back door after a rain until my
husband removes the water with a squeegee. If she's lounging on
the patio in the summer and feels even a single sprinkle, she is
at the back door in a panic.
So anything that indicates a bath in her future causes enormous
distress and total lack of cooperation. To get her to the
bathwater, she has to be leashed and the issue forced. While
bathing her she has to be tethered from multiple directions.
Running water that's not in the kitchen is absolutely a sign to
be wary and perhaps try to hide. If you walk toward her, she
will bolt in the opposite direction.

Somehow ours understood, and mostly obeyed, "no".
