The instructions that came with the dog sitting gig I did in
December told me to say “Time for Fidos dinner. Yummy, yummy”.
Sometime I said it. Other times I skipped the yummy, yummy part.
Either way Fido seemed happy to chow down.

The cat my family had when I was in high school could hear the
sound of her favorite person (my Dad) as soon as he walked into
the apartment building - long before the rest of us could hear
him approaching our door. She would drop whatever she was doing
and go racing to her scratching post to show him how good she
was being while he was away (this cat was known as the evil
kitty because she mostly preferred scratching me to scratching
her post, and generally caused a great deal of mayhem).
I have occasionally joked that the Facebiter is what she would
have been if she'd only had her favorite person at home. And
sure enough, he must be able to hear when my car alarm beeps or
when I'm coming up the steps, because just as I'm coming through
the door he's vigorously scratching my ottoman, which he's
pretty sure I intended to be his fourth scratching post. In his
defense, I think most of her bad actions were meanness and most
of his are anxiety. But then, I'm his favorite human and I was
her favorite victim, so I may be biased.

my gerbils are pretty vacuous (dont tell them i said that), but
my guinea pig Kabocha* would launch into ear splittingly high
shriek-squeaks whenever the fridge was opened. because that's
       where the veg was.
who needs an electronic emergency broadcast system or air raid
sirens when you have a gpig to sound the same kind of alarm.

*she was black & orange so her name is the Japanese word for
       "pumpkin" a la Halloween.

But the Floof, who I had between the two chaos cats, was an
       absolute saint!

Well, if one said the word 'WALK" within earshot of Chance, you
were going to see a dog dance.

Shrunken cat gets excited and comes to "are you ready?", which
means it is finally chow-thirty. She purrs and her tail quivers
too. She also gets excited when I say "oaties" to call her for
her daily treat, a taste of plain oatmeal from my fingertip.
She is usually waiting for me to eat breakfast, but sometimes
she is napping and I either call out "oaties" to get her to
come, or I deliver the oaties to her at her bed. No oaties
results in a day of pouting, so yes, I deliver. She only shows
up for "fresh nip!" sometimes, but when she is in the mood for
       catnip she gets super excited.
The labradog, Booger, was beside himself excited when I said
"let's go!" when it was time for a run, or "where's the ball?"
or "treat?" or "ride?" or "get them boogers!". "Them boogers"
       were his plushy toys.

I have had dogs for the better part of my life. And I've NEVER
thought their dinner looked "yummy" - not the dry kibble, not
the canned food, not the soupy chicken breast and rice I cooked
when they had stomach issues, certainly not the small cut up
pieces of cooked turkey giblets. I will admit that the pumpkin
cinnamon biscuits smell good, but I have yet to try one.
I think for the most part I have different food preferences than
my dog - the dog who once snarfed up and swallowed a paper-thin
dead bird from the street while on a short leash and without
       breaking her stride. Yum!
We do both like bananas and peanut butter, however.

the gerbs dont recognize words, but they do respond to my tone
       of voice.
i'd bought a loaf of seeded bread and lots of sesame & poppy etc
seeds came off when i was slicing it earlier.
so i called, "Kiddles ...come here, come here" in my singsongy
voice and they both popped their heads out of their house to see
       what treat awaited.
i had the seeds in my hand which i laid palm up on the cage
floor. even tho my hand was cold, their warm little hands were
busy stuffing the treats into their tiny pieholes.
so while not magic words per se, it's mom's magic voice that
       they understand.
