Magic Words

Do/did any of your animals have a magic word that would make
them excited no matter what?
For both Dakota and Ziva, there's one word that would wake them
from a sound sleep or have them come running from the back of
the yard to the gate.
"Coming?"

The Facebiter absolutely understands what's happening when I say
"okay okay okay, jeez" while getting up from the couch. It means
he's been a big enough pain for long enough to get second
dinner.
(He gets second dinner every night at 11, whether he's been a
pain or a delight, but he seems to think it's dependent on how
much ruckus he causes)

"Cookie" and "Go", I think.
Mostly it was actions. For instance, periodically I'd get my
yardstick out of the closet to get under the sofa and pull out
all the stuff Lucy would lose under it. She could hardly contain
herself when she'd see me get it out.

Some but not all of our cats knew Treats.
And one of them seemed to understand Time for Snoozing. She was
always ready to jump on the bed when I lay down and get a few
pets.
Except she never just jumped onto the bed like all the others.
She climbed a cat tree a few feet away, jumped to a window
ledge, stepped onto a small bookcase, and from there jumped to
the bed. It was quite a production.

Frankie knew "Time to get up."
Frankie, Sasha and Nori all know "Off you get" when I want them
off my shoulder. Coco most decidedly didn't learn that.
But I agree with actions are more than words. Frankie knew to
walk down my arm off a high place. She jumped on my lap or my
shoulder if I patted it. She knew the sound of the treat jar.
Billie was trained to snooze on a specific chair.

I can't think of any words that draw immediate attention.
Noises, that's a different story.
Gatsby's trigger noise is crinkly packaging, and the noise a
plastic straw makes when it slides in the plastic cup lid.
Both cats know the sound of the laser light toy. It's on a
little chain and they both turn their head and turn to look if
you pick it up. It was hanging on the key rack in the kitchen,
but it's been sitting on the table in the family room. Any
little unintentional movement will perk them right up.
Piper had some words:
Car ride
Go around
Go around was what we would tell her in the winter when it was
muddy in the back. We kept a towel in the garage to wipe her
feet so we would call through the window "go around" and she
made a bee line for the side door into the garage.

For Alex: "Treat." And, "where's your toy?" He also knew what
the mixer meant - it meant some cookie dough would land on the
floor, so he'd stand under me, staring down at the floor until
something fell. It's amazing how a piece of dough would fall
every.single.time. And if Mr. was having a banana, he knew he'd
get the end piece.
Ricky knew "let's go to bed" and he'd race me up the stairs. He
also knew "off" or "go back to your side". Both had to do with
the dining room table.
They knew so many words. We'd have to spell some around my
childhood dog, Bernie.
Sometimes I think Mia understands "Come cuddle." And she can
hear when we're coming up the driveway. She'll go to the
basement stairs and hang of the edge upside down when we walk
in.

“Are you hungry?” - the words my dog loves to hear. Of course,
she’s always hungry! Happy dance.
Occasionally I will momentarily lose my mind and ask my husband
this and that is NOT fair.
So - “No, not you” are probably her least favorite words to
hear.

"Go for a walk?" and "Go for a ride?"
Be prepared for bedlam in the house until you leave.

The cat my family had when I was in high school could hear the
sound of her favorite person (my Dad) as soon as he walked into
the apartment building - long before the rest of us could hear
him approaching our door. She would drop whatever she was doing
and go racing to her scratching post to show him how good she
was being while he was away (this cat was known as the evil
kitty because she mostly preferred scratching me to scratching
her post, and generally caused a great deal of mayhem).
I have occasionally joked that the Facebiter is what she would
have been if she'd only had her favorite person at home. And
sure enough, he must be able to hear when my car alarm beeps or
when I'm coming up the steps, because just as I'm coming through
the door he's vigorously scratching my ottoman, which he's
pretty sure I intended to be his fourth scratching post. In his
defense, I think most of her bad actions were meanness and most
of his are anxiety. But then, I'm his favorite human and I was
her favorite victim, so I may be biased.
