I never got into the love language books so didn’t know if they
claimed to be based on much data anyway. So I’m not the least
bit surprised that they aren’t.

I knew a lot of people who put great stock in "love languages".
While it was interesting (someone pressed the book on me to
read), I don't think it was at all the definitive work on love
and its manifestations. :)
People are far more nuanced than that simplistic take. We give,
or try to give, what is needed at the time by the person we
love. Depending on the situation, it may be presence, it may be
service, it may be gift. But no one is stuck in a category.
Besides, I got tired of people saying "But presents are my love
language!". (Or whatever).

My love language is "don't bother me with Woo".
But then, I also can't do the Marie Kondo "sparking joy" thing.

My love language is banana bread.
And a good medium rare steak.

I think debunking what feels like a reasonably valid general
concept on the basis that it's not quite so simple is stupid.
See also: Men are from Mars, Women from Venus: vastly
oversimplified but has elements of truth.
Like anything else, you take what works for you and ignore the
rest.

This is how I feel about the Myers-Briggs. It helped me
understand myself. Its underpinning’s may not be as scientific
as originally described but it still makes general sense for a
lot of people. So I like it.
For me the key is to be clear that something like the love
languages are developed based on x amount of data. Even the well
accepted psychological tests are subject to change as more data
comes in. Plus we are only recently accepting that there is a
lot of bias built into most of them.
