Religious Exemptions

My lenses on this: I belong to a Lutheran church (ELCA) that
believes the questions are more important than the answers. We
have two gay ministers. We gather to support each other, rather
than to judge others. I don't claim to know who's going to
Heaven (if there even is one).
I grew up in a very conservative Protestant church (Evangelical
Covenant), and went to Catholic school, and then a Dutch
Reformed college. (They gave me a very nice scholarship.) Never
heard anything about an anti-vaccine stance there. Started
attending an ELCA church in Austin, TX. I've had lots of
arguments over the years with folks who think their faith gives
them the right to tell others how to live.
I really don't appreciate being told I'm illogical, stupid, a
sheep, etc., for belonging to a church. And yes, I've been
called all those things, both online and in person. I've argued
for the freedom not to believe in a higher power.
I think the religious exemption loophole for vaccines should be
closed.

I think so, too! Parents in faith-healer sects, Christian
Scientist parents, and so on, have been told by the courts that
their kids MUST receive adequate medical treatment for [whatever
they have wrong with them], and parents whose kids died from
some easily treatable condition have been tried for their
deaths.
Some parents think that praying is going to keep their child
from getting COVID? Fine. They can pray all day long. But
that kid better get vaccinated or the parents need to be looking
at some jail time.

Excerpt: "We need to keep trying to persuade those hesitant to
get a vaccine. But we also need to allow employer vaccine
mandates to erect a trustworthy shield that protects staff
members, patients, customers, students and others. Religious
exemptions risk blowing a hole in that shield, jeopardizing
everyone."

I don't think parents who refuse to vaccinate their kids should
be thrown in jail. I just think they should find it harder and
harder to live as though there's not a pandemic going on. More
and more places are going to refuse entry to those who haven't
been vaccinated, which is reasonable. Once little kids can be
vaccinated, they may be barred from public schools, team sports,
movie theaters, etc. Let them deal with the consequences of the
parents' not choosing to protect themselves, their families, and
their fellow citizens. The kids will likely beg their parents to
be vaccinated, so they can socialize with their friends and have
fun again.
The parents deserving of jail time, under current laws on the
books, are the ones whose kids catch covid or another disease,
and the parents refuse to seek medical care for them.
I recommend seeing the forest for the trees here. I'd love for
everyone to get vaccinated, but I'm also glad not to be living
in China, where citizens' lives are scrutinized and controlled
by an authoritarian government.
