       Black Friday Stories
By: LabPartner Date: November 23, 2023, 8:31 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I never did the Black Friday thing. Mostly, I gave people cash
for Christmas. If I got someone a physical present, I might buy
it on December 23, or I might buy it in July. But I had friends
who made a tradition of the whole Black Friday thing. They'd
wake up at 3 am, map out the stores they would hit, the times
they would hit them, the doorbusters and special deals they'd
seek out, right down to when and where they'd eat lunch and when
       they'd get home.
I thought I knew these folks pretty well, but they were aliens
to me on the day after Thanksgiving. I don't know that this is
the best way to ask for Black Friday stories, but if you have
any, I'd sure like to read them. Shopper or store employee,
either way. Heck, I'd even like some stories from people who
stayed home while their loved ones went bargain hunting (or had
       to work).

I did Black Friday once in my hometown. I only wanted a couple
things and by the time I got there they were gone so I went
       home.

I did Black Friday a couple of years way back when it was
new-ish, 15 or 20 years ago. But I began to notice a pattern
that the advertised stuff was mostly second-rate and not really
great deals. I think it was my 3rd year when it had become
popular enough that traffic was nuts on that day. I've stayed
home ever since then. So, no stories from me other than the
Radio Shack employee who sneered at me for not buying batteries
to go with whatever it was I bought. I knew what batteries
should cost, and his were marked up way too much.
I suspect that people who look forward to it, like the hunt a
       lot more than I do.

I have friends who adore Black Friday and I just don't get it at
all. There is nothing I need badly enough that a minor discount
(or even a fairly deep one) will induce me to go shopping on the
day after Thanksgiving. In fact, we've hit the time of year
that the only stores I have to go to are HEB and PetsMart until
after the New Year. Indeed, I thinking about just getting kitty
litter delivered for the next month and a half and grabbing dog
       and cat food at HEB.
Thank goodness we're retired and can shop for groceries up
       during the workday now.

Years ago I used to go to the mall on Black Friday just to
wander around. I enjoyed the energy and the activity but rarely
even went into a shop. So I'd have a nice walk in a warm
environment, sometimes have a cup of coffee, and then head home.
Back when I shopped for my kids, I never actually shopped on
Black Friday. I know people enjoy it, but I don't. I hate
shopping when it's crowded and there are long lines.

This is a Black Thursday story, hope it counts.
We went to Durham, NC for thanksgiving, visiting stepson and his
family. But the actual thanksgiving dinner was hosted by their
cousins, no relation to us. On the way to the dinner, stepsons
wife and her parents stopped to go shopping, so they got to the
dinner late. Fortunately stepson was with us.
Generally speaking, I do as little shopping as possible between
       now and after new years.

You'd likely have parked so far away that the walk from your car
to the mall would've been enough exercise.

The closest I get to Black Friday is the marathon deletion of
       the gazillion emails
from my suppliers and other retailers that land in my inbox this
       time of year.
Haven't set foot in a mall in well over three decades. I spent
the better part of a decade doing windows and other display for
shops as a side gig... that'll cure ya!
Did I ever tell y'all about the year I decorated 30+ trees
during overnight hours in the two days
before thanksgiving so they'd be ready when the doors opened for
       black friday?
Words are insufficient to describe it.

I meant to add that they were cool trees, though... each unique,
       featuring one designer.
The ornaments were all high end, most handcrafted and many one
       of a kind.
A lot of hand-carved wood, blown glass, fiber work, metal...
       really beautiful pieces.
This retailer had three gallery locations, two in DC and one in
       Baltimore,
selling wearables, jewelry and decorative work and furniture
       from the type of artists
you see at the ACC shows around the country.
It was fun to work for her and great to have my own work there.
