As a fellow Floridian (still relatively new - 3 years) I also
find this amusing. My students tell me that the liquor store is
the real indicator of how bad it's going to be.

My in-laws are Floridians and I feel this.
Several years ago when we had an approaching storm with the
potential for power outages, and my Florida-raised husband ran
around doing stuff like buying bottled water to stick in the
freezer so that we wouldn't lose everything if the power went
out. And have potable water available if we needed. (Less of a
problem here in NYC, I think... but if it made him feel better,
it was a 20-pack of bottled water...)

Does your name refer to the West Coast of Florida?
I love living here, and dislike living here at the same time.

Here on the Oregon coast we have gales that roll in off the
Pacific all winter. The liquor store and the grocery store will
always be busy just before a big one.

My username is a lie (according to friends who called me out on
this relatively recently). I'm originally from Washington state,
and being from Washington was clearly an important part of my
identity when I first created this username almost 20 years ago
while living in Ohio. It's basically the only username I've ever
used, besides my real name, so it's stuck despite being a lie :)
My part of Florida is not when I expected when I moved here. I
was super against moving here - my husband had to bribe me to
apply for the job (which I was sure I was never going to get)
that moved us down here. His parents are down here and he was
done with snow. I like Gainesville, and central Florida is much
prettier than I imagined. I don't think I'll ever adjust to the
       humidity though.

Ooh! I've met Gainesville. Scritchy's grandmother used to live
there, and he spent chunks of his childhood there. These days
they're in the Cape Canaveral/Cocoa Beach area.
And the humidity isn't so bad.... in October... [emoji23]

[emoji23] [emoji23] Yes, Halloween to May Day it's a great place
to be, especially if you love the outdoors like I do. The rest
of the year...well, good thing there's air conditioning. I
actually haven't made it out to Space Coast yet, but I have
plans to make sure I watch a launch from a kayak in Mosquito
       Lagoon.
